Yuk!

Maybe we could get one of your pieces of string and use it to haul a pipe up there. We could pump some of the sea up there and if it was heavier it might stick around a while longer, we could have a bit more land as well, whad'ya think prof?

According to Professor Isaac Asimov, Ph.D., the Moon IS moving slowly away from Earth. However, it will not just drift away into space. As it drifts away, it is also slowly losing inertia.

At some point in the distant future, its inertia will drift below a critical level, and it will drift in more closely to earth. The inertia of the Moon will slowly drop more, to a point where the orbital speed means that it enters a geo-stationary orbit. Before it hits this point, however, the tides will become kilometers high, destroying all life on Earth.

The moon's distance from earth will continue to fall, and Earth tides upon the moon will slowly tear the moon apart, and Earth will have rings, not unlike Saturn today......

However, this will happen only in theory.

Before it can happen, the Sun will have swollen, and become a Red Giant.
