I was watching a comedian on Comedy Central the other night who was discussing the use of some sayings that seem realy strange. His routine made me think of a section of George Carlin's book 'Brain Droppings' as well as some other questionable sayings. Take some of these for instance:
1) "There's more than one way to skin a cat."
Doesn't this sound rather sadistic?
2) "Brite-eyed and bushy-tailed."
I have to agree with the comedian, this sounds like a squirrel on crack.
3) "Dropping like flies."
Why do we equate dropping with something that is known for flying?
4) Along that line how about "Meteoric rise."
Aren't meteors known for falling not rising?
5) "You can talk till you're blue in the face."
I would think this impossible. Blueness of the complexion derives from a lack of oxygen, and talking requires oxygen. Something is wrong here.
What do you think?
