Don't suppose you know how to change the player's description in an Inform game, when you type "look at self" or whatever, to something of your own devising (i.e. "You looketh pretty awesome")?

You are describing one of the very problems that made me abandon my last attempt to learn Inform, I'm afraid. The closest I ever got was being able to reprogram the basic command of Jump to say "You jump on the spot, vegetablessly" (as opposed to fruitlessly).

Sorry, I hit "send" without meaning to....
Anyway, I'd seriously recommend reading the IF Programmer's Manual (I'll search for a link), and failing that, there are various IF community's that can help fledgling programmers. I was just always too lazy to ask anyone when I found them.
I should really get to work on that....the CLI Text Adventure Trilogy had a few great ideas behind it.

Well, smeg.
I don't suppose you've got any alternative suggestions for text-adventure engines? Adrift (being not flexible enough) and Aiee! (being practically open-source) are out for now.

Well, I'd still try for Inform if you could, as nearly everyone agrees that once you can program in that language, you can program in any other.
However, two others that I know of (and never tried) are TADS and the AGT (but no one recommends AGT anymore).
But the experts think differently: www.brasslantern.org is a website devoted to the IF community, and frequently has articles over just the issues you're talking about.
I'd research them myself, but as I said earlier, I'm lazy.

Yeah, I kinda wanna avoid DOS stuff (AGT) ... and I've heard TADS is more complicated than it needs to be (although you could say the same is true of MUSHcode, which I've become quite proficient with; unfortunately, MUSHcode is entirely useless for single-player offline text adventures).
Key: Complain about this post
