i see you're a hootoo Community Artist - we're so fortunate to be able to talk to people with skills like you
does 'Community Artist' mean that you know how Researchers can directly add "do it yourself" images for their own use within hootoo pages?
(that is, without going through the usual channels of having images 'blobbed' for them, of course)

No, you can't, really. But anyone's welcome to apply to be a Community Artist. 
Even if you are a Community Artist, though, you can't really add pictures just to have them on site; they would need to be for a Guide Entry, for example, or for a Post article.
There are a few reasons the powers that be are a bit reluctant to allow that - for instance, fear of someone uploading hardcore porn or copyright images that could land the site in a spot of bother.
I wish we could - as other sites manage it without a problem. But there it is.
