Thou art a sub, art thou not?

Hi Lil... long time, no see.
I'm working on a University project on the American Revolution, and I understand that I am supposed to enlist a sub-editor to work with on the project. I've already enlisted one, but since Jimi X is a contributor, I don't think he counts. Whaddya say? Wouldn't you like to be involved with two of the finest writers on H2G2, piecing together a vibrant tapestry of our nation's humble beginnings?
Besides, you might be my only hope after the rant I left on the soapbox page about editing. I probably pissed off every editor here, and now no one will handle my stuff. But you still like me, don't you?
Anyway, if you're interested, the project page is here: http://www.h2g2.com/A415865

Colonel Sellers! You don't come to the atelier any more. I'm sure you didn't piss off all the subbies, but you've fingered one who's pretty busy IRL at the moment. I'm actually commuting to my ex-employer, repairing the damage done by the high school grad they replaced me with. On Thursday I discovered, belatedly, that the whole machine was infected with I-Love-You, so I have to rebuild from scratch on Monday. This on top of pushing along my regular job, the self-employment which never ends.
But I hate to say no. What do you need me to do?
There's a huge floor plan now at the atelier, and a fashion show and garden party coming up this week in aid of the joint birthday of moi and Garius Lupus. http://www.h2g2.com/A304354 ...

Yeah, I don't come to the Atelier anymore, much to my chagrin. The forums were *too* active, and I ended up spending too much time between sessions trying to catch up. Sigh...
What do I need you to do? Well, I guess all you do is agree to sub the articles in question, when the project is done. I'm not entirely sure. All I know is that I'm supposed to enlist one to work with. Details on the whole University thing are still pretty sketchy, and Peta and the rest are still trying to figure out how they want it to work.
At any rate, I won't be requiring your services just yet, so I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to deal with the damage caused by the untrained monkey they replaced you with. But if you will still be unavailable, I'll go on the lookout for another sub who doesn't hate me...

Hold me in reserve: ask again when you're ready.
Being active is a blessing and a curse, I think. Don't forget how fast your business threads moved on FFFF. I found THOSE difficult to keep up with. Is that forum still active?

Fair enough. I'll put you in the on-deck circle.
It has its ups and downs. Someone will come in and wake it up, and the conversation gets hot and heavy, and then it gets quiet again for a week or so. Right now we're in a lull, but you don't notice it too much, since we're all wrangling on Fragilis' Agnosticism article. It got approved a couple of weeks ago, and we're still going at it.
Foundation threads never moved as fast as the Atelier. I'd log in and find 40 posts since my last at your place. Even at its busiest, I don't think we ever exceeded ten posts in a day. How you manage to keep up with it all is a mystery to me.

I live there.
Do at least go check out the new improved floor plan. There is near-unanimity that having a common visualisation of the place makes it easier to follow. The map is at http://www.h2g2.com/A453773

Yeah, I checked it out before I stumbled in. That's what inspired that whole retrospective thing I just put there. The last time I was there was when you first created the map, since it was done to help people navigate that party I bartended. I spent almost my whole weekend on that forum, or at least every moment I could spare, and I still ended up handing off to Ampton most of my duties. That was when I realized it had gotten to be too much.

It got even worse when we had the virtual presidential campaign this summer. I was in a coalition with redbeard, Garius, Affi, Looney and Odradek to elect The Celery, and as he was an h2g2 creation, not a real researcher, the other candidates really went after us. Two murder attempts and a kidnapping attempt, a funeral thread, a banquet that exceeded a thousand posts... there were several days when I hardly left the computer!
Anyway, you're not the only one who has ceased to attend regularly or who won't visit at all because it moves along so fast. But then, if the moderator goes away, a forum often dies on the vine.

True enough. And as the moderator, you feel like you have an obligation to your members. I know all about it, which is why I do my fair share of instigations for the FFFF threads, to wake them again.

And, greetings again!
The Revolution project is just about ready for subbing, and I've finally gotten some instructions from Mark regarding the process and how you become involved. You should have gotten the same instructions, since they were supposed to be posted to the Sub group, but I can post you a copy of what he sent to the University group if you didn't. But, of course, now comes the big question... are you available?

Hallo Colonel!
I am no longer a sub! I resigned a couple of weeks ago because I was being enormously unproductive and didn't see myself changing anytime soon. Anna says I can come back when I feel ready, but I don't want to overextend myself.
So I apologise for letting you down. Have you contacted Looney? He might be able to help you, at least after the holidays.

Blatherskite the Mugwump - Bandwidth Bandit Posted Dec 23, 2000
Well, thanks anyway. I'll ask Looney. He's a great editor, but I hesitate to ask him because of the subject matter... he's rather open on his anti-American prejudices. If he doesn't want it, I'll just ask Mark to find me one, and suffer the consequences of whoever volunteers.

Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence Posted Dec 23, 2000
Colonel, I think you can trust Looney -- he's not anti-American at all! And gods know he's been through the mill on being suspected of as much. You should go to his home page and look for a conversation entitled "Just wanted you to know..." to see what sort of villainy has been heaped on him.
Looney has this terribly subtle and waspish sense of humour which gets misinterpreted very often. I recommend him because he is a professional journalist and editor IRL.
Have a good solstice, btw. There will be researchers hanging about the atelier over the holidays if you want to drop by.

Blatherskite the Mugwump - Bandwidth Bandit Posted Dec 23, 2000
This isn't any villainy that has come to me from others, but rather what I've interpreted from several conversations I've had with him on various subjects. I'm sure there is a chance I've misinterpreted him on this score, so I'll go check it out, but the fact that it has cropped up in so many different conversations makes me wonder.
Merry Mithrasmas!
