Hi Lil

After doing an extensive search of the hootoo atelier, I couldn't find the library. I found the rift, which is in the library, but no library itself. Is this correct? Can we add a library convo?

My main reason for doing so was to discuss the above. I'm still only a third of the way through it, but it is great. Really fantastic.

We have a very comfy library reading room with a little fireplace, french windows on to the terrace, nice wingback chairs and an oriental rug, even. You are welcome to start a conversation in the library.

I'm very glad you like Cryptonomicon, and was pretty sure you would. Bobby Shaftoe is one of my all-time fav -- but I'll save it till you have a chat going.

It's a good idea, when commencing a thread at the atelier, to set the environment up in the first post. I recommend including the link and then a bit of description, as I did above. Or a lot of description, if you're feeling gothic -- rain thrumming against the flagstone terrace while all is cozy within, pools of light cast by reading lamps etc. etc.

The library is nominally Hypatia's domain, actually. Your description can run free in the reading room, but be aware that, on the blank-looking side there is a large central desk, Hypatia's throne as it were, and lots of shelves (infinite capacity) running up the walls and standing free. And a roped-off aisle leads to the fFordean rift.

*thinking to herself* We must get David B involved, what with him being a librarian too.

Hey Lil

I'm looking forward to reading a lot of Stephenson...I haven't felt this way about an author in a long time. Recently I've basically had enough after 1 or 2 books.

Anyway, so the bottom line is that there isn't actually a library conversation currently in the atelier. Should I ask Hypatia if she wants to start it?

Crypto is reminding me a lot of catch-22. The humour, especially the Shaftoe's, just reminds me of the situations from the Catch. I literally just read the part where Waterhouse and Shaftoe are on the wrecked sub on the reef. They get the message that they've been spotted by another U boat. Waterhouse says it "sure would be nice to have stethoscope". And shaftoe immediately says "Sir, yes Sir!"

I just about died laughing.

Another bit I loved was when Shaftoe orders his men to spray paint ALL then numbers after they've just changed their squadron (?) number because it's prime. Which Shaftoe doesn't know, of course. That information would be totally irrelevant. All he knows is that he has to destroy evidence.

I'm going to go over and start a library reading room thread now; Hypatia is busy IRL. I know Marv will join us because Cryptonomicon is his all-time favorite book.
