Happy new year and all, Lil! Good home page: your work sounds fascinating. How do you get into stuff like that?

I haven't previously taken much of a chance to talk to you, but Marv the Grate and Luna, in their forum about "I'm here for the bagels..." etc. mentioned that you might have some good words on where the best sci-fi is. Mind you, neither of these people have heard of William Gibson, either, so should I trust them...smiley - smiley? Pleased to make your acquaintance - even if said words aren' there to be found!

By the way: is it my imagination or have you been changing your name a lot today...smiley - bigeyes?

Hey, Hypoman, I've seen you about on the fora but I guess we
never have struck up a direct acquaintance before.

Any fan of William Gibson is a friend of mine! I regard him as
the foundation author of all that's been written in the past,
what, 15 years, in re computers, the net, their impact on human
civilization... Neal Stephenson, for instance, an author that
Marv and I share great admiration for, is obviously very much
influenced by Gibson.

Have you checked out the Irving Washington Book Nook? That's
the title of the page, which belongs to Beeblefish so I don't
have the number to hand. Anyhow, we founded the page a few weeks
ago because the bookclub threads were getting so popular at
Irv's Aroma Cafe. And although the emphasis looks to be s-f, you
could discuss anything, anything. Check out the business thread,
it will bring you up to speed.

Yeah, I changed my name, enhanced it you might say, a few times.
But, what with the imminent defenestration of the Lords and my
US citizenship, I reckoned I better go back to being plain Lil.

As for what I do, you need to be willing to go broke, I guess smiley - winkeye.
Seriously, I hope that Billy will do some good PR for me in exchange
for me restoring his good looks....

Are you a student entity? I'm sure I've been to your home page, but
it must be weeks ago, and I should refresh my memory. I just spent
upwards of 10 minutes waiting for some other thread to download,
and am just grateful to have got to my own page! smiley - smiley

I'm interested to hear about Neal Stephenson - I'll have to check out the book nook (Pastey's making noises about including the Aroma Cafe's stuff - or at least a book review column based on that - as part of the POST, and I think Beeblefish is keen, too...). Pastey sent me the address, but I think it's on the Email account I can't reach at the moment from here.

Sorry to say I'm not a student entity, any more, but I am a librarian - which is almost the professional equivalent, you might say! Unfortunately I'm only a contractor (librarianship still doesn't pay all that well - you just find the stuff that other people need, and they seem to need it rarely enough that you're constantly staving off unemployment!), and at the moment I'm writing a library catalog for a health consumer advocacy group in Australia.

I know what you mean about connection problems - my connection at home appears to have been swamped by people who were putting off doing anything on the 'net until the Y2K kerfuffle had died down, and who are now complaining that all the money which was spent to ensure that it didn't happen was wasted!

So when do we get to see a posted image of Billy (or if there already is one, how do I get to it?)...?smiley - smiley

I am waiting for feedback from the True West editor before I treat Billy as "cast in stone". I sent the article and support images to Arizona in mid-December, and True West were in the middle of wrapping the March issue... So there could be a bit more wait.

Billy will be on my own website, asterlil.com, which I am learning how to build just now smiley - smiley, because the images are huge. Just the head and shoulders portrait is something like 7 MB at 300 dpi.

I have been having this problem with all the images I've painted for the book nook -- incredibly difficult to abandon that degree of scale and detail!

The book nook is at http://www.h2g2.com/A229943 and business is picking up smiley - winkeye

And have you heard about the correspondence listserv thing ffMike is administering for h2g2 researchers who want to discuss things more extensively? There are 10 of us now, including Courtesy38 and Looneytunes, and it is a hoot. There's more info on ffMike's home page. If you join us you'll discover that a librarian is exactly what we need on the desert island we've been washed up on!

Yo!

Hey, have you joined ecircles? Some researchers are posting photo albums (including me), and it's quite interesting!

I haven't yet, I will be leaving my current job in the next couple of days to couple of weeks, so I am reticent to join another email group. I probably will when I go to my new job.

Fair enough. ecircles isn't really a chat list, though. More like a gallery where you can post comments to pictures as the fancy takes you. Still, it's a rather cumbersome interface....

Hey, Hypoman! You ought to join us over at the Irving Washington Book Nook ( http://www.h2g2.com/A229943 ) where the #6 forum is trying to work out the casting of Dune according to different directors. Right now we're casting for Woody Allen and Terry Gilliam, and I am larfing fit to bust....

Took a look.

I also had a laugh at some of the things you guys were saying, but I must admit that I gave up the Dune series as a hopelessly epic creation years ago - probably about the same time I got on to the Hitchhiker's Guide: conciseness in comedy, perhaps...?smiley - winkeye!

I enjoyed some of the book lists, too, but I must admit I probably would have added a few more...smiley - bigeyessmiley - smiley!

I'll get back to you guys over there, but I've just had a rather disturbing piece of news about this job...

Regards,

H.

G'day again, Lil!

Hadn't seen or heard from you in a while, and wondered what you're up to. Being a stickler for recycling I decided to make use of an old forum to ask this question: any news worth relating?smiley - smiley

Feeling a bit down & concerned about the cybernephew, who's been stricken from the rolls of subbies AND ACEs.

I have a salon & gallery, now at http://www.h2g2.com/A304354 where some nice conversation takes place; you're welcome to join us when you have the time.

What's new by you?

Hi Lil!

Post 16

Hypoman

Not a lot of news by me. Some work, which enables me to get onto h2g2 a bit more often at the moment, but that will end with the financial year in June. Editing going well (if haphazardly), learning a lot about bodily decay, and otherwise existing comfortably.

I hadn't heard the news in the first paragraph - anything I should be aware of? Will pop over to the salon shortly...smiley - smiley!

You'll read Mike's account of himself in the Bth Conversation (I'm numbering them in hex). You'll find yourself in a strange story: I rent the upper floors of Crater Labs Inc., which is run by Afgncaap5 and Garius Lupus, and which is a source of constant anomaly. I own a two-toed sloth named Mindspring, a charming pet, and my cybernephew Mike A has a room there as well. Now read on... smiley - winkeye
