I visited your website - you've got beautiful pictures.. what do you use for your 3d art (you did say on the site but i can't remember) and where did you get it? (I like dabbling myself, its relaxing, although i'm not very professional!!)
I like your styx the rat particularly.. did you do him on paper and scan him in?

Hi Androktone!

Thanks for the compliments. My 3D work on the website was done with Bryce 4. I have version 5, but haven't installed it yet -- it is supposed to be really good at trees now. I'm also playing with a 3D fractal program called xenodream which takes a bit of learning at first, but which turns out really intriguing pictures.

Styx is one of my favourite pics too! And he started out as a rough sketch on a yellow legal pad. I thought I had captured a neat expression so I re-drew him in Painter 6.

Do you do digital art?

Um, I don't have any packages.. I don't even have my pirate copy of coreldraw anymore! I've actually done some surprisingly intricate bits and pieces just in mspaint, i do logos for friends and stuff, obviously its really restricting though because there aren't any tools as such.. but being poverty stricken as usual,i've yet to find any really good freeware packages.. I'm still figuring out how to set my website up (bought a domain, struggling with the silly hosting company that seems to have attatched itself to my domain) but i'll put bits up eventually smiley - smiley

I loved your 3d stuff I always wonder how people do that sort of thing. Do they have body templates you can fiddle with? Or did you have to do all the sprites yourself?

Body templates come from a product called Poser. It contains a library of basic shapes (including some animals): the user adds hair, clothes, adjusts the posture, tweaks the face, plays with the lighting, and renders the result.

Personally, I don't think the figures are that great that you get as a result of the render, but Amy the Ant and I generally use the rendered image as a basis for our own paintings -- we add our own clothing, hair styles, expressions, props, etc.

Most people will tell you to save your money and get a Graphire tablet (as a starter). I think it comes with paint software, maybe Painter Classic or Photoshop LE. I would agree!

How much are those sorts of things? I love doing geiger biomechanical type stuff, I do a lot by hand with inks and airbrush but i'm sure i could be much more impressive with the right software!

You'll have to check [url removed by moderator] for flat prices -- I've been upgrading for years so I don't know what the real cost is any more. Adobe are famously high-priced, and Painter is now owned by Corel, who don't stint on the tags either. That's why I recommend a Graphire tablet (made by Wacom), if you can get free paint software thrown in, which you normally can.

The Graphire is around $100 in the USA. It is a pressure sensitive tablet with cordless mouse, with 512 sensitivity levels (the fullblown Intuos has 1024 levels). What country are you in?

the UK, so I can probably get hold of something similar. Thats not as much as I was expecting. I remember how much corel 4 was when it came out!!!

Thanks for all the advice. Now i have to wait for my January Bonus from work =)
