Fingerprints of a future ghost..
The age of television did not really get under way until after 1953 in the UK. That was the year of the queens coronation but for a three year old like me (as I was then) it was a time of bunting, street parties, jellies and trifles! Being working class the age of television for us was nearer the end of the decade 1957 or 58 when we finally got our first set. Until then our world view was dominated by what happened in our immediate locality and it has to be said that when television arrived it also became a part of our immediate environment and changed our world view radically. Neighborlyness seemed to decline in proportion to the number of ariels sprouting on rooftops - broadcasting is much more powerful an influence that many people suspect. (It is to be hoped that those running the BBC as a public funded broadcaster will bear this in mind and seek to lead the way in responsible braodcasting.) My interests in photography, philosophy, science, computing and music belie "the war within" between the artist and the rationalist. Thankfully in my later years I have begun to mellow and see that the greatest artist is that which gives, sustains life and all that is. A wise man once said that human beings are the marriage of the infinite with the finite - some things can be rationalised and some things cannot there is no paradox when you are standing in the right spot....
