There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

I had an idea it was a Scottish thing, purely from having seen that episode of Rab C. Nesbitt where they go on a 'pilgrimage' to the Abbey to see where the wondrous stuff is made smiley - tongueout

It's call a jockstrap here too, it's what you put the cup in ... Don't look at me like that! The reason I know that is because ... um ... well, I'll think of something ...

Hmmm, I didn't know that. I guess that's why they call sport heads 'Jocks' in the US. I can't recall what a cup is called in the UK now - it's either athletic support or athletic protector, and cricket it's called a box. I think they might call it abdominal prtoector in boxing. It's all way too confusing. Did we do...
UK hard disc = US hard drive
...yet?

Jockstraps: a nickname and a joke

Post 450

paulh, vaccinated against the Omigod Variant

Jockstraps are (were?) sometimes humorously
referred to as "Noseguards." Also, sometimes,
"supports."

Here's a joke that goes back to the 1960s:
Vice president Hubert Humphrey supposedly
said about President Lyndon Johnson,
"The president can have my support--and
anything else in my gym locker."

(Okay, not the greatest joke ever told,
but July is still young--unless the Thingites
have started renaming the months, too,
and it's called something different now smiley - smiley )

UK (transport) timetable = US schedule
UK (electric) socket = US outlet
UK cooker = US range
UK ring = US burner
Those last two might be regional American - I phoned the leasing office here one time to let them know that one of the (electric) rings on the cooker wasn't working, and the woman (who knew me pretty well by then) said something like "I'm guessing that what you mean is that a burner on the range is out." Maybe range just means the hob - i.e. the top part not including the oven.

It might be regional ... we call the top the stove, and the bottom the oven ... and the rings are the burners.

UK bill = US check (restaurants)

'Range' in the UK means only a coal- or wood-burning cooker, such as an Aga or Rayburn. A 'stove' is similar, but with only a hotplate, no oven, although many people now use it to refer colloquially to a gas or electric cooker.
