It's me, Speedygreen. How did you send out that message about july 4? Did you use your buddy list, or send them individualy? Do you know where Cape Cod is? If you do, I live in Hatchville, a village of Falmouth. Nice area, you should vacation here sometime, most people do, which would explain why we have such hell with traffic around summer time. What part of Penn. do you live in? Get back to me when you get a chance.

By the way, when you volunteered for all those things, how long did it take for them to get back to you?

Hey Speedygreen, thanks for stopping by!

Anyone who has you listed on their friends list will get a message when you add a journal entry. It's one easy way for friends here on h2 to keep track of things.

As far as Cape Cod, I've never been out of the Cape. When I'm in New England I either go the whole way up to Maine or stop short in Rhode Island (I did my honeymoon at Newport, RI). But doing the Cape is on my list of places to visit for sure, I've heard it's lovely - though I might venture up there 'off-season'.

I live near Hershey but not so close that I can smell the chocolate.

As far as my volunteer badges...
I joined the Sub-editors back in October 1999.
And I guess I joined the rest of the schemes as they were created.

I know that Abi signs up new ACEs about once a month, so if you've been waiting longer than that let me know with the thread # you applied and I'll see if I can't jog her memory a bit. smiley - winkeye

Thanks, Jimi. I volunteered for being an ACE a while ago, not a week after I joined, but I just recently volunteered to be a scout. anyway, The cape is beautiful in just about any time of year, and because we're surrounded by sea, our temperature is never too far to either extreme; It's usualy nice and doesn't usualy excede 90 degrees or go below 45. If you do go to the cape, go to falmouth. Hyannis is to commercialized, Yarmouth and Dennis are too barren/middle of nowhere/ you get lost at every turn, barnstable is too big and middle-of-nowhereish, Sandwich is to rural, and Provincetown is to 'weird'. Falmouth is very nice and offers many nice hotels, motels, and right next door to falmouth is Mashpee, with a nice resort I stayed at called the Seamist. It is right next to the Mashpee Commons, which is like a big outdoor outlet mall, without the nice prices. If you want to go to and stay in Falmouth, go downtown to the Best Western across from the Falmouth Harbor. It is only a short walk to the ferry that takes you to Martha's Vineyard, and I work there!(the Best Western.) If you go to the best western, and you take advantage of the free continental breakfast, you will most likely see me, as i am the breakfast attendant. anywho, I will see about the thread # for the ACE request, and I will get right back to you with the one for the Scout request.
thanks abunch, and look into that stuff about falmouth. I can give you some good websites if you are interested.

That's a great bit of content. Have you considered doing a bit of research and submitting it for inclusion into the Edited Guide?

Really, writing for the EG is pretty easy. You've just got to get your facts in order and then put pen to paper (on in this case, I guess fingers to keyboard? smiley - winkeye)

I'm a pretty strong advocate of the school of thought that *everyone* has an entry to contribute to the Guide - which was what Douglas Adams believed when he created this whole mish-mash a little over four years ago. (See A550955 to see what I'm gibbering on about)

Anyway, given your local knowledge I'm sure you could do a fair write-up about the Cape - places to eat, attractions, sneaky places to park the car legally without paying, etc.

If you want to know how, do give me a shout...

Yeah, that'd be pretty cool. I think I might know enough about Falmouth to do a considerable entry. Unfortunately, If I become a scout, I couldn't recomend itsmiley - winkeye. thanks for that, and I guess I'll let you know when Abi gets back to me about the scout thing.

The Scout scheme only has so many slots available at any given time, so breaking into that one is the most difficult.

It's set up so that if each Scout picks three entries, it'll create a constant flow of entries to the Sub-editors which then creates a constant flow back into the h2g2 offices for the five-a-day on the Front Page.

One of the best ways to ensure you'll be picked when it there's a vacancy however is to stroll about in PR and comment on the entries that have been submitted there.

I'm pretty sure the italics will smile favourable on an applicant who demonstrates a good work ethic toward reading entries in Peer Review and offering appropriate comments.

It's tough work - there's a lot of entries in there and many of them are not yet ready for the Edited Guide so constructive criticism is required to bring them up to standard. On the same hand, some entries will probably never be up to standard and explaining that with tact is one of the hardest things a Scout can be asked to do...

At the same time, there are entries from established writers smiley - whistle which hardly ever receive comment. And these guys could use a bit of constructive criticism themselves to catch any typos or odd idoms that don't translate to a worldwide audience.

Blah, blah, blah...

I'm sure in a chatty mood today. Sorry about that.

Time to get off line and do some yard work I reckon... smiley - winkeye

See you tomorrow!

smiley - cheers

Hey, I just looked at my other new messages, and Anna said that I was on the waiting list to be a scout, and that i shouldn't have to wait too long. Also, she said, just like you did, that i should get some practice by going to peer review and commenting.
