Hey Ace, I looked at the smileys pages, but I still don't understand how to actually put one in a posting. Please help.

Hi JEllen! smiley - biggrin
Here's what you do:
for smiley - smiley you type : - ) without the spaces, of course.
for smiley - biggrin you type : - D
Those are the simple ones.
For smileys like smiley - peacedove you type < peacedove > without the spaces.
And a nice cup of smiley - cappuccino like this < cappuccino > or < capp > without the spaces.
I like this one: smiley - sheep < sheep > (It's a new one smiley - winkeye)

If you aren't sure you got it right, I recommend using the preview massage button, so that you can check it before you post.
(Like I had to do now because I couldn't remember how to spell cappuccino...)
So, its mainly <> with the smiley-name inside it.

Give it a whirl and when you're ready I'll help you with the GuideML. smiley - winkeye [ ; - ) ]

Hi JEllenJ42 smiley - smiley

I see Bumblbee has buzzed off smiley - biggrin

so I'll try to answer your question..

GuideML is a special kind of 'mark-up' language, or 'code' used to add formatting and style to guide entries and articles, such as personal pages and such, on h2g2. It is very similar to HTML, and to XML

To take a look at the underlying code for pages on site, which is what just about everyone does who wants to learn how to use it, you replace the 'U' in the user number for the address of a personal page, with the words 'testuserpage' -- all in one word.

So to look at the code for Bumblebee's page, for example, you would replace the 'U' in the address, thus: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpage51488

to look at articles, replace the 'A' with the word 'test'

for more detailed info, check out the GuideML clinic -- see the links on my links page, or follow the links from the info found here:

Have fun, and ask anyone for help, anytime.. everyone here is quite friendly, and eager to help smiley - smiley

Thanks Taliesin smiley - smiley
Don't worry JEllen, I knew nothing about codes and stuff when I started here. Took me a good while before I figured things out, but thanks to patient people I've learned a LOT! smiley - biggrin
Keep asking!

Thanks for the info Taliesin. smiley - smiley I think it falls into the category of "more than I ever want to know." I don't know too much about computers (obviously). However,I am enjoying poking around.

smiley - geek I know what you mean smiley - erm

Trouble is, once you start 'poking around' pretty soon you can't resist adding a smiley or two to your personal space. Then you add a table, and maybe a picture from the h2g2 art gallery...

It never ends smiley - online2long

smiley - cheers
