linux woes
Posted Aug 5, 1999
"If you're going to be a member of a horde, it might as well be a horde of intelligent programmers rather than a horde of halfwits who need that little message that says "click here" bouncing next to the Windows Start button to figure out what to do." I reasoned. So I ordered a copy of Red Hat Linux 6.0, which arrived today at 12:42. Seven hours and thirteen minutes later, I have accomplished the following:
1. created a boot disk to run the installation program
2. deleted one of my windows partitions so I could repartition it into a couple of linux partitions
3. selected the things I wanted to install from a long list of incredibly arcane choices
4. waited for said choices to install
5. been forced to abort because the program makes some kind of error while looking for my mouse
6. repeated above 10+ times
Currently am incredibly frustrated. Supposedly everything will be wunderbar if I can get the bally thing to install, but it refuses to install.

novels
Posted Jul 31, 1999
I started another novel last week. My last novel was aborted six months ago, so I suppose that this one was about due to appear. I have a whole graveyard of manuscripts in a box in my closet, many of which sound eerily like the books I was reading at the time. This latest, for instance, is a little like one of Elizabeth Peters' Vicky Bliss mysteries.

Friday (possibly)
Posted Jul 24, 1999
You know it's summer when you haven't the vaguest idea whether or not
it's Friday. I mean, during the year it was important, because if it
wasn't Friday you probably had homework to finish or something. In
the summer you don't need to worry about anything more important than,
"Do I need any more ice in my tea?"
