Mixed Fortunes

So far this week, I have fallen off my bike (leg: bruised, ego: dented), managed to drop some very sensitive documents and find half of them fluttering down the street some time later (the other half are still at large) and told two people that they can move in with me when I only have room for one. I'm on a bit of a roll.

Today marks the end of the eleventh week of my petrol marathon. And I'm still going strong. Ironically, I need to buy a new car within the next few months. It doesn't seem right, considering how little I drive mine, but the bottom line is that I DO need one. Occasionally.

Softball starts in a week and a half. So far I've done a grand total of NO pre-season training. I'm expecting big things of myself this year. All the cycling is keeping me fit though (I just won't be able to catch, that's all!).

Barking Mad

I'm sick. And I'm not happy about it. The flu that I had three weeks ago, and which required me to take my first sickie in nearly three years, hasn't gone away, and now I have a nice secondary infection that has swelled my tonsils to about eighteen times their regular size. I also have a cough which is roughly reminiscent of a barking seal, or a labrador with a speech impediment.

The worst thing though, is that I'm not getting nearly as much sympathy as I deserve.

On the bright side, we won our netball grand final except that instead of winning a tacky little gold trophy (which is what I WANTED!) we each got canary yellow polo shirts declaring us the "Mixed Netball Premiers". It's hard to fathom something that could be any more unwearable.

My non-car driving experiment is continuing. So far, I have racked up over eight weeks on this one tank of petrol, and I still have nearly half left. That's a sign that the weather is improving to the point where I don't have to drive to work to avoid being rained on.

Oh, the highs and the lows of life.

More whining about netball!

I've just come from playing not one, but TWO games of netball. In all their wisdom, the organisers decided to schedule the preliminary final straight after the semi final (it was an economic decision, I suspect!). So we played our little hearts out, and won the first game, and then had to play again immediately. Only our opponents in the second game had just had 45 minutes rest. That seems fair doesn't it?

Fortunately, we kicked their butt, which was great because the opposition were (and I'm being rather frank here) pains in the ass.

Now we have to play in the grand final next week, and our band of loyal supporters are choreographing their cheerleader sequences as we speak. I can't imagine that they'll come up with anything respectable, and will no doubt restrict themselves to sitting on the sidelines, drinking beer and yelling helpful things like "Jump". It's so nice to have supporters!

Ooh, my aching butt

Tonight, I played netball again (as I do every Tuesday night, if you happen to be following my schedule (and if you are, stop it, it's making me uncomfortable)), and my opponent kneed me in the butt. Amazingly, she managed to connect with the ischial tuberosity (technical anatomical talk) and now it hurts to sit down, walk or do the can-can. I don't think she did it on purpose, but I can't be sure because she was a little aggressive. We won, however, which just goes to show that we're far superior, even when I'm hampered by butt injuries.

On another subject, I was walking home from the train station in the thick of a major squall (I now realise that there are severe weather warnings current) and I nearly got blown over because the wind direction changed so suddenly. It was very invigorating, however, and I've made a bit of a pact with myself to walk in bad weather at every opportunity (and given this city's pleasant climate, there really aren't that many opportunities) in order to fully appreciate the roof over my head when I actually finally reach home.
