Don't know about Java but the HTML books published by O'Reilly are pretty good and I hear they don't suck at the other technical manuals they produce (and they do everything you could possibly want).
This is old-fashioned impartial advice - I have nothing to do with the company - I just own a couple of the books (and find them invaluable).

I have heard this, and I have even seen some of the books and have been impressed. However, finding the finances and the time are, currently, a problem. Oh well, maybe soon I'll wake up with a job and a lot more free time....
