Thanks guys! Me and the rest of tv's clan is ok. I'll put up a journal entry detailing the fun that was Bret, but basically we abandoned town for a few days, and the hurricane turned at the last moment and spared us a direct hit. We still had lots of rain, wind, and flooding, but no injuries, very little damage, and our home had no damage at all. Not even a drop of water made it in our home.

Perhaps I should move.......

That's good news TVF - time for a guide entry on hurricane hype d'ya think? I've heard Florida's next up for one.
As for moving...do you mean somewhere safer or more dangerous? It kind of read like you were disappointed the hurricane hadn't been more exciting
I know hurricanes are scary and all, but we don't see much exciting weather in England unless you thrill to persistent light drizzle. Mind you, I have family near Rhode Island and they told me some horror stories about the last one that hit near them. And the earthquake in Turkey makes me pretty glad that I live somewhere as geographically dull as here.

BTW can you answer me a question that's been bugging me for ages.
Why do people in hurricane zones build their houses out of bits of thin wood and not brick/concrete etc.? Were they never read "The three little pigs" when they were kids? Or is it 'cos you have to assume at some point that the house WILL fall down, so you need to limit the damage that results when the house is broken up into debris on the wind? Just wondering.

Believe me, I'm thrilled nothing major happened here. I've only been living on the coast for less than a year and this scared me like crazy. I never had to abandon my home for a snowstorm....as far as the construction, I don't know why people build like that. Apparently, this part of the Gulf of Mexico is not that busy hurricane wise. A hurricane only makes landfall here every several years, and it had been 20 years since the last major hurricane. So I think many people here get complacent and assume we'll never have a problem. That probably explains why half the people at my office didn't bother to evacuate this time round.

I think they're messed in the head......
