Hi bob

I'm your sub-editor for The Battle of Naseby. The new version is A87855547 - please subscribe.

I've done quite a bit of work on the GuideML to put things into House Style, so I hope everything is OK for you, but let me know if there is anything you would like me to change.

I have a couple of questions:

The first question is about the horses - in the Battle Formations and Battle Begins sections, I'm not clear about when "horse" means an actual horse, and when it means "cavalry". Is it cavalry all through, or did eg Cromwell's actual horse stand on its own facing the Royalist horses?

The other question is that Okey's dragoons are mentioned separately in the table so I wondered why Harley's regiment wasn't also counted in "Other Forces"

smiley - ok

I shall attempt an explanation

The term "horse" is a generic term for cavalry as "foot" is to infantry. So Cromwell's horse refers to all the cavalry regiments under his direct command. Sub division was achieved by using the regimental commanders name.

At this time regiments of the army were often raised equipped by individuals and named after them.

Dragoons are mounted foot or musketeers used for rapid deployment, hit and run troops if you like.
The dragoons being neither foot or the horse are traditionally listed separately.

Thanks bob smiley - cheers

Thanks for those explanations - very helpful. I added a footnote and tweaked a few bits to avoid confusion when "horse" could have meant an individual horse, so I hope everything is OK for you.

Let me know if there is anything else you'd like to add, and then I'll send it on its way to the Front Page smiley - ok
