Journal Entries

And term continues..

Term has recently started here, so things have been kind of busy. I should really write more exciting and interesting things here, but as I'm (a) supposed to be writing an article for a friend on what's wrong with the Internet (lots of things, but I won't bore you now - ask me if you want to hear the default rant) and (b) up to my eyeballs in
work, it'll be a while before anything gets written that's particularly insightful, fascinating or actually worth reading.

Minor plug, though - I have two books on the go right now, "Mastering Algorithms with Perl" (the new O'Reilly Perl book) and about my millionth reread of "The Cuckoo's Egg" by Cliff Stoll. They're both highly recommended, and in particular, if you're involved in computer security and you haven't read "The Cuckoo's Egg" you're missing out. Worth it just for the cookie recipe.

I'm also rereading my "Life In Hell" books, but that's more the few-cartoons-when-you-feel-like-it kind of thing and doesn't really entirely count as Literature.

Well, hey. Approved entry.

Golly! Many weeks after I submitted them (the editors have presumably only just got back from lunch), I find mail in my inbox informing me that my entry, "Guinness", has been approved as a Real Official Guide Entry.

It's been merged into a single entry with a number of other (no doubt better) entries on the same subject, and hey, it looks like they made a pretty good job of it, too.

So, which way to the fame and the women?

Getting stuff done?

Well, I finally managed to get my web page updated to reflect the
fact that I moved a few months ago, and lost some of the stuff that
was really cool and up-to-date in November 1997, but now is kind of out
of date. My page on "buying a PC" has turned into a fine historical
document in the meantime, so I might as well leave it as is..

Of course, the new stuff isn't _live_ yet (I need a wheel to sort
out the CGI for the snazzy voting form thingy), but what the hell.

The Sunne In Splendour

It really is a gorgeous, sunny, wonderful day. This is, naturally,
because there is a bank holiday weekend coming up. Until everybody
knocks off work tomorrow, it'll stay this way.

And then the rains will come.

For the time being, however, it's paradise - every grassy surface
for miles around is covered in people trying to get some colour
back into their pale bodies after the long winter and spring of
cloud, rain, gales and hail. And, of course, because they know
it'll be the last chance they get for a while to catch some rays,
as the sun will probably disappear for another three months after
this.

In the meantime, well, just call me Zonker.

The Sun

A sunny day in Dublin, and what do I find? h2g2.com is open for
business. So I sign up.

Do I know what I have let myself in for? We'll find out, I guess..
