My ex had his system set up so that it would start up (from shut down, not sleep or hibernate. I checked) when you hit the space bar.

I'd love to know how he did it!

I just useually use the win, u u key combination as its quiker to hit those keys than bend down and find the PC, open the door, and push the on/off button (which I have set up to perform a shut down when you press it whilst the PC is on...) smiley - erm

The windows button does have its uses. Last time I made the mistake of loading the Google Chrome sidebar, being unwilling to hit the system with a hard shutdown (pull the plug, remove the battery) when the sidebar did its thing, went into an irretrievable safe-mode crash, I hit the windows button, all other buttons having failed, which brought up the start menu, allowing a soft shutdown prior to reboot and uninstall.smiley - steam

...on the other hand, Google Chrome (without the sidebar) works fine as a generalized web browser and more and more I use it to handle everything originating with Google, freeing up space on other web browsers for other search engines and purposes...

The Windows button allowed rescue after a Google crash. I hate to have to physically pull the plug and remove the battery in order to shut down a system that has seized up and won't respond.
