Fortytwo

This seems like such a popular semi-requirement:

Wilderness Survival on Earth – Introduction & Basics:

Wilderness Survival on Earth – Introduction & Basics:
The Earth is populated almost exactly the way that strawberries carry their seeds; they’re all on the outside. Conversely, the Earth is also populated almost exactly the way that apples carry their seeds in that they are all grouped around centers. Once one leaves the safety of the centers around the outsides of the planet, without the benefit of sufficient technology (such as a towel or a briefcase), survival can become a problem.
The globe is replete with vast, virtually un-crossable stretches of undrinkable water; unbearably wide stretches of burning, inedible desert; unbearably wide stretches of freezing, unpalatable snow and ice; and impassably thick stretches of lushly vegetated jungles and forests; in fact, there is so much stretching going on that most of the planet’s surface is either uninhabited and deadly, or simply uninhabited and dead.
In that there are also vast, virtually un-crossable stretches of unbearably beautiful white beaches with undrinkable stretches of nearby hotels, hotel bars, lounges, restaurants, wait staffs, and various impassably thick stretches of opportunities for recreational personal abuse, it is hoped that these suggestions will never be found to become valuable to the reader. But, if you find yourself fighting unruly vegetation, unfriendly life forms, or unhealthy landscape, you will be glad you brushed up on these basics.
Basics:
To survive in the less comfortable environs of the planet, one must be bold, courageous, knowledgeable, resourceful, and above all friendly; friendly to anybody and anything that could possibly be friendly or useful back. Here is the minimum that you must know to survive until someone comes to lead you back to what passes for civilization on the planet; if, indeed, that is your wish.
Requirements:
Most life forms reading this article will require some combination of the following; shelter, clothing, food, tools, fire, water (or reasonable alcoholic substitute such as beer), and entertainment. The order in which one attempts to acquire these basic survival necessities depends largely on the type of environ in which one has suddenly found himself/herself/itself/oddself, and whether or not you’ve been invited to a party.
Necessities:
Given the choice, it would be best to be caught out in the wilderness with a fully equipped, long-range, attack helicopter or perhaps a seaplane – better still would be an intra-planetary ion-flier of almost any design. Lacking immediate egress, certain tools and sundries would be immensely handy to have with you, many the choices of which depend on the terrain, and the length of time you might need to survive in it. These could include – but are not limited to – a good, sharp knife, an axe, an entrenchment tool, lots of rope and/or cord, safety pins (the name is not an accident), a method of making fire (always assuming that your available fuel supply does not consist entirely of your life-raft), and, of course, a towel.
Niceties:
These might include things like material for constructing suitable shelter against wind, rain, or monsoon; containers that can retain potable water and appropriate additional clothing that will not; climbing gear, first-aid supplies, primitive or advanced weaponry, and fully-equipped caterers. The assumption here, however, is that you are stuck, virtually alone and barely clothed (or, barely alone and virtually clothed), without sufficient resources to just sit it out and have a drink whilst being rescued.

First Submitted Article

Well, I finally got around to posting an article to the Guide on June 22, 2003. I'll just keep my fingers crossed while I type up the next one.
For anyone interested, I titled it "Some Tips on Making Stage Props" and it now resides in the Peer Review Section.
Wish me Luck
