Can anyone offer me up a good theory as to why North Americans tend to prefer cold Lagers and Europeans tend to prefer warm Ales?

Par example, I am American, and just recently finished college, so you can imagine I've drank some fairly foul brews in my day, but I fancy myself much a connoisseur, trying everything under the sun, foreign and domestic, as my bottle cap collection will attest. Despite the fact that I have cirlced the globe with my toungue, my favorite beer persists to be Michelob, a $4.99/6-pack Lager brewed by Anheiser-Busch. Can anyone shed light on this curious phenomenon.

Oh, and also, why can't France or Belgium brew anything resembling a good beer?
