Hiya! smiley - smiley
Our parents' evenings start right after school these days, but somehow they have stretched from two to three hours, although I always start a little late because I nip home to take the dog for his walk. They are all crammed into one term, too, but at least it gets them over with. I do usually have a smiley - redwine or a smiley - stiffdrink when I get home though. smiley - smiley

Most of the parents are reasonable enough, fortunately, though a few complain about you afterwards rather than to you while they are there.

I remember one year there was a parents' evening on Wednesday, we broke up on Thursday and Friday was Good Friday, and a fool of a senior teacher telephoned me on Good Friday as I was getting ready to go away and told me some parents were complaining but not to worry cos it would keep until next term. Idiot!

You do have to laugh. School play tonight, so I shall be doing my bit there. Unpaid but, as ever, uncomplaining - lol!

Take care,

David

Hope your having a restful weekend David..&..all the parents evening have finished..until the next time..smiley - smiley..

How did the play go..enjoyed by all I hope..

My dad was a PTA member..used to help out with plays and 'stuff'..it was at a school play..before easter..in 1973..he asked my 2 brothers (aged 15 & 16) to be on the door..taking the tickets..some woman..(a parent)..had 'a right go at him' because she wanted to be on the door..a few days later..he had a heart attack..&..was taken to hospital..he had another heart attack couple of days later..and died..for a long time I blamed that woman having a go at him..causing his death..I'd spit whenever I saw her..smiley - laugh..that was just silly..she didn't cause his death..a blood clot did..

sorry..this post is a bit depressing..the mention of school play..&..Good Friday..(he died on a Good Friday) bought the memoris back..it was a long time ago..smiley - smiley..

Hi Em,
Thanks for your letter - what a sad story smiley - hug - you must have been very young then. I have done my time on PTA's, and to be fair the ones in the schools I have been on have usually been pretty good, but I know that sometimes there are factions and ill-feeling bubbling along, often stretching back over the years to long-left older brothers or sisters, and imagined insults or slights. I think it's even worse where sports teams are concerned, with hugely competitive parents encouraging their children regardless of skill or talent - there was a bit in the paper over the w/e about a parent threatening to kill a teacher who substituted for his son in a football game.

I didn't actually see a lot of our play, because I was helping out supervising pupils when they were off stage, but I think it went well enough, as did the Year 8 disco on Friday evening. I am a Year 8 keeper, so I came along to show support. I'm glad I am not a parent of some of those little girls I can tell you.

Yes, thank you, my weekend was ok - nice weather for sitting looking out at the garden wondering vaguely if I ought to be doing some gardening. Next w/e we are off to Barcelona looking at a house, and after that it's Easter - just the latest in the endless round of holidays for teachers!

Oh well - 8.40 on Monday - children coming in, so I'll leave you.

Take care smiley - smiley

Hi again!
Well, actually we are not just looking at a house this w/e - we are signing for it. My wife went over in January for her daughter's birthday (she lives near Barcelona) and found it, and now we have reached the paying stage, all without my seeing it. it doesn't seem quite real yet - perhaps it will after tomorrow. There's a fair bit needs doing to it, but hopefully that will all have been done by the summer. There was an offer of return flights for £39 in last Sunday's paper and my wife is going for two separate weeks in May and June to jolly things along.
I don't think there's any problem with Gilbert going - the quarantine business is if you want to bring animals into the country, and I doubt if he will ever want to come back once he's got used to the sun and sangría!
Has Alex tried "Silent Hill 2" on his playstation? I love it but it is driving my wife mad!
Take care - talk soon,
David smiley - redwine

How was your weekend?..does the house seem real..now you've seen it?..

Are you planning to move there in the summer?..being very nosey aren't I..smiley - biggrin..

Gilbert didn't go with you then..that's why I asked about the quarantine laws..though I don't suppose it would've been difficult to find someone to look after him if your wife had gone too..

Alex has heard of "Silent Hill 2"..but hasn't played it yet..

If you look at my name..I'm now a Guru..as well as an ACE..I don't know as much as other Gurus about the tech. side of the site..but..I'm learning..smiley - biggrin..

Guru, huh? There's glory for you. Is there any special form of address which I should use in future? Have some smiley - bubbly to celebrate - cheers! maybe one day I will find the time to do more on here myself, and you will help me to get my ACE badge? smiley - smiley Well done, anyway - it's good that people are willing to give up time to help others.
Yes thanks, we had a good weekend - flew to Barcelona by Easyjet early on Saturday morning and home again onn Sunday afternoon, the only delay being on the M42 on the way home. Lovely weather - 48° in Birmingham, 72° in Barcelona! We went over the house, signed for it and had the keys, so yes, it does seem real now, and nicer than I expected - my wife was a bit defensive about it in case I didn't like it, but I do. I'll put some pics on my geocities site so you can see it and be envious. Everyone here is suspicious at how cheerful I suddenly am! But who wouldn't be? smiley - smiley
No, Gilbert didn't go this time, but he will do. He's always had an interest in flamenco, and although that is really from the other end of Spain his geography isn't that good, and he's looking forward to it, as well as all the little Spanish dogs with long lashes and dark flashing eyes.
"Silent Hill" might be an acquired taste, but if he isn't wild about football and shooting games he might like it - it's cmpared with "Resident Evil", not that I have that, but it might mean something to him. Atmospheric!
Oh well, back to work
Bye,

Hi Em! smiley - smiley

You must have got back too fast for me - I added a few pics today, though, just to get started. http://www.geocities.com/dhasdell/spain_1.html gets you to the first new one, but it links to the rest, and I will add more when I can. What do you think? The beach pic, by the way, is just one from the net when I first started playing around making a site and adding sounds etc. It is better than the West Midlands, though!

Yes, we have plans for Easter - the timeshare near Marbella, the other end of Spain. Something else I should add pics of. We've had it for a dozen years now, and although you hear all sorts of stories about timeshares we have been very happy with it. In a way it's a pity I booked the flights so early, as otherwise we could have gone to our own house for the first time. Still, never mind.

Although we are only a dozen miles or so from Birmingham (near Dudley) and have been here for 17 years now we very rarely go into the city.

I do have a PC at home - fairly elderly now, still using Windows '95, but does most of what I want - except it's a bit slow for flight sims.

Talk soon - though we go away on Saturday, so it might be after Easter. How about you? Have you any plans for Easter?

Take care, smiley - bubbly

Hi Emm!
Thanks for the letter - yes, it is a nice house, and every time I see an article in the paper about properties in Spain I think again how lucky we were to find it. Remember though that we have both been working for 30+ years and the sale of the house here will pay for it, as you get more for your money in Spain in property as in everything else. smiley - smiley
How was your Easter? Did you get out at all with your friend as you hoped? I saw on Sky TV that the weather was good in England a lot of the time. As I told you we were in our timeshare near Marbella, the other end of Spain from the house, but if I hadn't booked the flights before Christmas (before we had even seen the house) we would have gone there instead. We enjoyed it though, as we always do, in spite of some pretty bad weather. There was enough sun for some serious sunbathing, and at the moment I am a bit darker than an Indian girl who teaches maths here! One of the best bits of the trip was a boat trip near Gibraltar to watch dolphins: http://www.dolphinsafari.gi/ They move a bit fast to get good pics, though!
No marking in Spain, but plenty now - essays done over the holiday (overdue - I don't like to set holiday work) and now school exam papers flooding in.
I do have a PC at home - it's where I do most of my internet and site stuff, but I didn't touch one in Spain. I'll add a few pics when I get round to it.
Take care smiley - smiley

Hi David

Glad to hear you had a good holiday and enough sun to return with a tan. smiley - smiley Dolphins are terrific creatures, and apparently intelligent too, lucky you to have seen them close up like that.smiley - wow

The comment about 'i thought teachers were badly paid' was part of the on going joke about teachers being overworked, underpaid, always complaining, blah blah blah, smiley - laugh All the best to the both of you, I hope you spend loads of happy years in your new house. smiley - biggrin

The weather was pretty good here, we didn't go out that much, the time went so quickly, it always does when Michael visits. We took my dogs to the woods a couple of times, which is a longer walk than they normally get.

On Easter Sunday, we went to one of my brothers for a couple of hours, my other 2 brothers plus kids were there. smiley - smiley Where I got a nice surprise. Do you remeber those old reel to reel tapes, well my dad used to record me and my brothers singing and saying nursery rhymes on it, my mum still had the old reels, and had them converted to CDs, me and brothers got one each, it was a laugh, listening to it, it had my dad singing on it too. smiley - biggrin

oh well let you get back to your marking, no rest eh. smiley - laugh

Hiya smiley - smiley
Thanks for your post - sorry I've been a bit slow replying, but things have been busy at work. I know teaching is only a part time job, but they still manage to squeeze in lots of exams for the children in the summer term, all carefully spaced out to be on the same day for both years 7 and 8, so the marking all comes at once too!
The part time job is part of the same ongoing joke as the pay - I can take either, and it often helps to get in first.
Reel to reel tapes! That takes me back. I remember using them occasionally in my early teaching years. And Banda duplicators, remember them? The things that used an inky drum to reproduce teachers' handwritten notes and usually came out wet and purple at one end, dry and indistinct at the other and probably with a wrinkle or two for good measure? Smelt funny too. Those were the days.
Yes, dolpins are cool (I can speak teen when I want to!). Very intelligent and they look as if they enjoy playing. Some were swimming and jumping right ahead of the boat we were on, almst as if they were showing off.
My wife came home from Spain yesterday having looked at the house and done some gardening etc. and she's off again next week, going from Barcelona to USA with her daughter (works in Barcelona, did I tell you?) for her son's wedding. A lot of her recent and planned flying is on My Travel, and very cheap - cheaper than easyJet, and even than a recent Sunday Times offer using My Travel. Our record so far is £23.00 return Birmingham to Barcelona. If you can fly weekdays and want a break they are worth a look: http://www.mytravellite.co.uk.
Ok, I know I should have done the clever bit with that link, but I was in a bit of a rush.
Oh well, back to the marking! Soon be time for a smiley - redwine
Take care,
David

Emmily ~ Roses are red, Peas are green, My face is a laugh, But yours is a scream

Hi david smiley - smiley

I'm back, and feeling much better. I took a longer break than I had intended to. There was a lot of things going on in h2g2 both on screen on 'behind the screen' (aceforun email) that was getting me down. I needed some time out to decide if I still wanted to be an ACE, I decided that I do. smiley - biggrin

Micheal is currently staying with me, we re-arranged his holiday, was gonna be 13th June, changed it to 30th May, nice to have his company. He goes back to brum on sunday.

Hope you enjoyed the recent school holiday, at least the weather was nice for a change. The nice long 6 week one is next, unless I'm mistaken. Are you holidaying in your new house during 6 week holiday? Gardening looks quite easy in your new house, at least you don't have the dreaded grass to cut, I hate cutting the grass. I'm not too keen on flowers, most of my plants are foilage shrubs, though I try to choose ones that don't need pruning. I've got hebes, a sundance, a couple of different peires, (I'm on the third or forth redflame, the dogs keep killing them smiley - laugh) a couple of palmy types that I can't remember the name of smiley - doh, I'm not very 'green fingered'. I've got a fish pond in the garden, well I say fish pond, it's quite small, 3ft x 4ft (don't know what that is in metres or whatever, I still live by feet and inches smiley - laugh)

Have a glass of smiley - redwine

David

Hiya! Nice to hear from you again smiley - smiley I'm glad you decided to stick with Ace-ing, though I can quite understand how it could get annoying sometimes. Odd people flock to the net, and I guess H2G2 is no different from elsewhere.
"Holiday" she says - you mean half term? I took 44 Year 8 children to Germany. OK, I know I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it, and I know I'm not forced to do it, but even so it is not a holiday - your own children you can send to bed and they go (or not) but with a school trip you end up sitting on the landing until about 1.00 in the morning.
yes - it's the summer holiday next - life's one long hoilday for us of course - and we hope to move to Spain during it. Quite exciting. The gardening looks easy, but I have a feeling that things will grow pretty fast in Spain and there'll be a fair bit of work needed. In our garden here we go for the "woody glade" look, where an hour's mowing the lawn every couple of weeks is all I do and it gradually gets more and more "natural" looking! That's my excuse anyway - the garden is for sitting in, not working. I'm not really a gardener - spider plants do OK, but most other things die fairly quickly.
Like you, I don't recognise metric nonsense - nothing wrong with feet and inches. I don't like kilometres either, although it is nice to see how quickly you cover them abroad - makes journeys seem shorter.
Oh well, nearly home time - plenty of smiley - redwine hehe.
Take care,
David

Jeez has it really been 2 weeks since you posted this, where does the time go.

It wasn't the newbies that were getting to me, it was the 'behind the screen' stuff, it's all ok now anyway. smiley - smiley

Hmmmmm smiley - laugh you make it sound like you were the only teacher on the German holiday, at least it got you out of the paper work, hang on, don't tell me, let me guess, you had to take that with you too. smiley - laugh

My part time courses have finished until September. I intend to re-enrol on the English on Computers one, carry on where I left off there. And enrol on the follow on to New CLAIT, New CLAIT Plus, I haven't looked yet to see if there are any other courses that interest me.

I assume you'll be retiring then, bit much to commute from Spain each day smiley - silly Have you been teaching at the school for long?

Hello and Welcome David...

Hello again!
I can't believe it's a week since I logged on - you are certainly right about how fast the time passes.
No, I wan't the only one on the German trip - there were three others, but I had done the paperwork - collecting money, writing the letters and so on. Once there I didn't have so much to do - you probably won't have guessed, but I am not really a jolly teacher, the kiddies' friend, so I leave that part of it to the others once we are there.
Did I tell you that we are moving into a new school in September? Well, I'm not of course. The result is that the children will finish a week early to allow for packing up, and start a week later in September to allow for moving in, so now there's only a week of "real" term left. Year 11 have gone, Year 10 are off on their works experience next week, so it really does feel like it's coming to an end now. I've been at this school for 15 years, and was at one in Plymouth for 15 earlier, so I haven't moved around much. I've never been one of those with a grand career plan of three years here and promotion, three years there and promotion. Smiles - too lazy. Or unpromotable!
I did offer to commute from Spain, but they wouldn't pay the expenses. Never mind - I'll just have to live without the delights of working any longer in that nice Mr Blair's education, education, education. It's quite a bperformance to take the dog to Spain, you know - injections, check-ups, export licence - I had no idea it was so complicated.
Thanks for the smiley - redwine I'll think of you as I drink it,
Stay sane,
David smiley - smiley
