There is a great story. It's about a 'something' whizzing around in space, before time and before anything. Because the something was alone it felt lonely. It decided that it would make a mark in space and that if one day it came across that mark it would know that it had been there before and that would make a difference. So as it whizzed around it made, from time to time, a mark. A little spot, a pinprick. And the marks stayed where they were and gradually became joined with other marks. And the joined up marks became things and the things became worlds. And thats why we are us.
I like that story.
