I need to do the restore, which probably won't happen til the winter but will get back to you if I can't sort it after that

I was thinking about wiping the harddrive. I got into the habit of this with my previous mac, when it had to go in for repairs once a year. I didn't want my data in their hands, so I used to send it in with a clean HDD. I like it because it meant I had a big clear out of crap, and I only reinstalled things I really wanted instead of all those interesting 3rd party programmes that didn't work or I never used.

I've been told by a geek friend that it's a bad idea to wipe the HDD, but other than something about losing all the recent updates (which isn't true because SW update sorts that) he couldn't tell me what the problem is.

It's just running slow - spinning ball of death alot, and typing in text boxes is slow and jerky. I guess I could try some maintenance first
