I'm getting more confused (about astrology)

There seems to be some inconsistency regarding the influence of celestial bodies...

I read earlier in the astrology thread that the planets themselves are *not* the influencing factors, rather it's their position at a specific time...

Yet on the site that Alji posted a link to, it says << The Moon, the satellite that *rules* over the more personal emotions and feelings of human beings, appears in the... >>

You likened things to comparing apples with oranges, and I'd really like to know which is which

i agree that thread is getting quite confusing.

for a while there it was hard to tell which were the straight anti posts, and which were genuinely interested in understanding what astrology is (though they might still disagree with and critique it).

also i've only just realised that some people might not know what a natal chart looks like, and if thats true then some of the explanations given might not make as much sense.

and there's also the issue of explaining across differing paradigms.

the planets are the starting point in astrology and knowing their position is paramount. however i think your question depends on whether you are

(a) looking at a chart trying to interpret it, or

(b) trying to answer criticism of astrology from a science or physical world view (thus the explanations about the position of the planets in the night sky)

from a chart interpretation point of view, the planets can represent different parts of someone's personality. eg the moon might be used to look at how the person uses emotion; mars might be how the person uses assertive energy.

then you look at the sign the planet is in. if the moon is in taurus you might say that the person relates emotion in a grounded sensual way (or is stubborn). if the moon is in aries you might say they have fiery emotions. (i'm grossly oversimplifying here, and every astrologer interprets a different way)

so you look at all 10 planets and what signs they are in to give a basic overview of how that person might be. there are other things that you do after that to relate it to specific issues in the persons life etc


if. however you are wanting to know how the physical planet in the sky could affect someone at birth depending on its position, then i can only really give the example of the moon that i did earlier in the thread. this is a good example because the physical effect is so obvious. but i suspect that if there is an objective reason why astrology works it will be to do with subtle energy that we don't have the science to measure yet.

like i said i'm grounded in a more psychologically based astrology. the hard science isn't really that interesting to me. its like trying to apply hard science to freudian or jungian psychology. its a non-sequitur.

i hope this clarifies things a bit, but i'm still not totally sure which angle you were asking about. i might go and find a website that explains astrology well.

I've been reading *the* Askh2g2 thread and thought I'd let you have my re following threads WITHOUT subscribing to them

This only works in Goo, which apparently plays havoc with some peoples eyes (luckily I find it by far the least irritating, and I like the colour scheme)

Anyhoo, with your *preferences* set to Goo you get the chance to use FRAMES, which do occupy quite a bit of screen space AND slow down load times a bit BUT they give the details of all the conversations hanging off of the relevant A-page

So once your in one Askh2g2 thread you can see the titles of another 24 threads that were *last updated* around the same time as the one you're reading

On top of all that, at home on a dial-up modem, I use the Opera browser which is heaps faster than IE on the broadband network I use too

And Opera allows individual frames to be refreshed

I think I follow all that. I'l have to wait until I try it out though as my mac is about to be repaired, and I have some shoulder RSI, so there is a limit to how much time I am spending on h2.

I think I did try frames for a while ages ago, but I'm on a laptop (small screen), and I have my fonts set large, so I think I found there was too much scrolling.

I have tried Opera and might look at swapping over permanently when the machine comes back. Opera got pretty bad reviews by mac users on its (Opera) website forum though. I'd be *really* happy to stop using I.E.


I'm quite intrigued to go back to goo and try out the frames idea (I swapped back to alabaster because it seems to load faster).

I'm having some time off h2 this week - just reading once or twice a day hence my eyes this afternoon. I had a particularly intense month on h2 - a week of stayign up all night and chasing the most posts in 24 hours list (made it to the top ), and then more recently overdid it in a number of Serious threads.

I've been missing the Kia ora/G'day thread too. Not too many Kiwis around at the moment . The Aussies seem to be out in force though . A new NZer joined this week - there is a new thread on the Oz/NZ page about joining up, and near the end of that a woman called Enoha joined this week. I haven't caught up with her properly yet.

I stop by your PS every now and again, to see what you've been up too. I still can't figure out what that Thing is at the top of the page (I did try and find the graphic's original page, but no luck so far). So a mystery....
