Hiya Toy Box, How are you? I have just read your Nicknames entry and I must say it is a terrific article..
My name is Stephen, but when I was a baby, my eldest sister, Gloria, couldn't pronounce the word Stephen but woould say Peeben instead...
The nickname has stuck with me for life. As a kid in England, everyone called me Peeb, Mum, Dad, brothers and sisters, Nana and Grandad, Uncles and Aunties, friends and their parents, neighbours, even my school teachers. When we came to Oz, the same thing happened! Only my kids don't call me Peeb, but my nephews and neices do, and so do some of my grandkids....
I suppose I am stuck with it now, but I don't mind....Actually, I quite enjoy it, as it is not nasty or derogatory....
btw, I notice you are a mathematician! I am a Metallurgist, but gid not achieve my qualifications at the level you achieved yours.
Stephen (Peeb)

Nice to meet you Peeb!
Children mispronouncing names, that's another great source for many nicknames indeed
As for high qualification, I wonder sometimes if there wouldn't have been better ways to spend my time:
