I am a bad Mommy....

I left early on Friday after a call from Mom that she needed some help with a problem at the house where she is house-sitting. Apparently, after the fiasco with the keys (thinking she had lost them and finding that the keychain which she assured me was not for the house in question actually was, the lady had locked the back door to the porch and the door from the porch into the kitchen and, when Mom tried to unlock it, the key wouldn't budge. Nor would the outer door lock open. Neighbours came to try it and the back door and neither key worked.

Not an entirely problematic situation on its own as she COULD use the front door. However, the family cat was in the porch with no food or water and since the BACK door key wouldn't work, either.....

I went over and tried it and we finally called a locksmith who took off the lock, rekeyed it and rescued the cat..... to the tune of $70. This is the same house where she fell down the stairs.

Luckily, the home-owner is very nice and acknowledged that the locks were pretty old and should be changed. I got a checque for the amount I paid, last night.

THEN.... Saturday morning, I was watching Benjamin chewing on a plant and noticed something "odd" about his mouth. It looked as though a maggot was sitting on his lip.

After corraling him and holding him down to examine him, I found that his lower left canine tooth was hanging by a tiny piece of tissue. I finally managed to remove it, in case he swallowed it and took him to the vet later. The tooth had rotted right in two.

He has to have the remains of the broken tooth removed and the rest of his teeth cleaned. If it is the same as last time, what they thought was heavy plaque build-up was actually several badly rotted teeth and required the removal of three teeth (which would have cost over $400 if they hadn't been kind and dropped it to half that because they had underestimated the amount of work required), then he is in for some major dental work and I will have to put the bill on plastic....

Sigh.....

I really feel terrible because I KNEW his teeth needed cleaning and put off and put off taking him in. Actually, I planned several times to take him in and each time there was a family crisis. I feel so bad because he can't clean his own teeth and I am supposed to look after all that and I neglected it.

I am a bad Mommy....

Goose in the well, and iguana plague

I drempt that I was over at someone's house and went into the bathroom.

For some reason, they had a very large round hole (about 4' wide and about 15' deep) in the counter which, when you looked down into it, was a sort of well containing tap water. It seemed to be made from a a galvanized aluminim pipe and was painted white. There were a number of pieces of laundry down the well.

The water to the taps and toilet did not seem to be working properly and I was looking down into the well and lushing the toilet to see it if was working but it didn't weem to do anything whent the toilet flushed. As I was looking down into the well, suddenly, I noticed a twoel start to move across the water. At first, I couldn't see anything but then I saw that there was a gosling swimming about in the water!

We and all the neighbours set about trying to figure out how to get the gosling out of the well.

Finally, we left and started driving through the countryside. As we werwe driving along, we were seeing large numbers of iguanas all along the road, either sunning themselves on the rocks or zipping in and out of their holes.

Apparently, they were poisonous.
