Laptop dies

Bugger.

I discovered to my joy today that my laptop's power circuit had mysteriously died - while the machine itself still works, the battery is almost flat and I've no way to recharge it. This sadly means my time on H2G2 is likely to be limited until I can get the machine fixed (or replaced, though I'd hope I don't have to). Ah well, at least it waited until after the end of my exams to go wrong...

Exams over, journal starts!

Well, I'm glad to say that my first year exams are finally over, and to celebrate I'm starting this journal (woohoo, I sure know how to party...)

I guess I should probably start off with a brief run-over of my university life so far, 'the story so far', so to speak.

I entered university towards the end of last September, studying Classical Civilisation and Egyptology. As the course went on, I gradually came to realise that while both subjects interested me, I was truly more interested in Classical Europe than Ancient Egypt, and so at the end of the year I arranged to have my course changed to a pure Classical Civilisation BA. I was worried that I would have to take catch up courses next year in Roman History and the Archaeology of Rome, as those were core modules of the first year of the single honours Classical Civilisation BA, but was pleasantly surprised to learn that, as I had taken a full beginners course of Latin during the year, I would not have to take any catch up lectures at all!

As it is, I'm now looking forward to entering my second year as a student of Classical Civilisation, once I pass my exams*. I had a hard time choosing modules, as there were many I wanted to take and only a few spaces available, though I am considering taking a beginners Ancient Greek Language course on top of my allocated modules - apparently this is allowed, though obviously I'll stop doing it if the workload gets too high!

I'm also looking forward to leaving the student village - while I'll the friends that I'm not living with, they're all living fairly nearby anyway, and I certainly won't miss the drunk students that occasionally annoyed the village (the highlight being woken up at 3.00am by a crowd of rowdy drunks, on a day when I had an exam at 9.30am). It'll also be nice to have access to an internet connection that isn't a) severely restricted by the university, or b) a dial-up, 1p a minute affair, which is all that was made available to students living in the student village by NTL - despite assurances that a monthly contract would be available. So yes, I'm happy to get away from that!

*expect to hear about me failing in a few months time, followed by a series of interesting entries about life on the streets smiley - winkeye
