Longing for rain and cooler temperatures

Post 1

Rosa Baggins, (see LOTR appendix Hobbits Family trees for more information)

We are heading in a solar minimum and yet in the British Isles, Ireland, Northern and Western Europe have been experience record high temperatures and a severe lack of rain. This summer seems like it is never going to end with the constant heat and high humidity it is making it unbearable. I live in a cold building and I cannot keep cool. Usually when it is very hot, it is very cool inside, but not this time. All I am looking forward to is cooler temperatures, thunderstorms with plenty of rain or at least seasonable temperatures and seasonable weather.

[Waters the garden one more time]

If you're a gardener, and you want our supply of zucchini and green beans to continue, you will have to water them more than once a day. 94 degrees yesterday, and likely 94 again today, showers or no showers.

Since I'm not growing a garden this year (Not till next month anyway) I'd settle at the moment for a coooling breeeze.

Instead had a strong hot wind last night.

My garden is a wildlife garden where I have large pots of wild flowers and herbs grown for the benefit of the birds and insects. I have got several bird nesting boxes which include an owl nesting box. I also have a bat box and a bug hotel as well as hedgehog habitat. It is a part of RSPB give nature a home campaign. Most of wild flower seeds come from the RSPB.

Your garden sounds wonderful, Rosa. smiley - ok

There's a rain garden in my backyard. My perennial sunflowers are blooming now. There are swarms of tiny bees throwing themselves at the blossoms. I've made them very happy, and I like that. smiley - smiley

I have Sweet Coneflowers, which are a tall form of Blackeyed Susans. The blossoms give off a faint smell like an almond biscotti. smiley - flyhi If I were a bee, I would like them too.

Surely you don't expect snow this month? smiley - huh

My family went on camping trips in Maine in the early 1960s. It would be early August, but the night temperatures would be very low. When we climbed Mount Katahdin, we arrived just after a freak August snowstorm that killed some hikers.

So, yes, if you are in the wilds of Maine or Canada, or in upstate New York, you could get Summer snow, but surely not Britain?smiley - grovel

Paul there have been times when it has snowed in June but I think that must be in Solar minimum years.

We have had night frost in every month of the year here in Denmark, but admittedly that was decades ago. As for snow we probably didn't have any during summers since the last ice age

There were several modest mudfalls (combination dust storm/drizzle) in the Coachella Valley in July, besides temps hitting 50C.

It started raining here about ten minutes ago. Probably going to rain steadily for ours. The up side is that I won't have to water the gardens today. Another up side: low eighties for the temperature, compared to 94 the last two days.

On average, we get 42 inches of rain a year. (I.m not making this up.)

If a year's worth of rain accumulated on my roof, I would have about 15,000 gallons of water there. I collect about a quarter of that as it drips from the eaves, and use it for watering the garden or flughing the toilet.

We finally had two minutes of rain yesterday. Did us a lot of good.

Wednesday we should reach +34C (+93.2F) but that seems to be the last hurra of this heat wave. After that we will be back to normal temps (+20-22C/+68-73F) thank Bob!

But the drought will carry on for maybe another five weeks it has been predicted smiley - yikes

This could mean a new record. Disturbing smiley - erm

Hopefully that this will be the last of the hot humid weather and no more 34°C temperatures and back to 21°C. Keeping cool is very hard when the weather is very hot and humid. No matter how may fans I have on and how many chilled drinks I have. There are no accompanying cool winds as when there are gentle winds and breezes it is usually very warm.

It'll be 93 degrees tomorrow, but Wednesday calls for a bit of rain, so that'll cool things off a bit.

Thank you, Paul, cooler temperatures are guaranteed but the Met Office has lowered the likelihood of percipitaion from 60% down to 30%. I think this might change as the last time there was a heavy shower of rain it was only on the day that the chance of rain increased.smiley - cheerssmiley - tasmiley - magic

If it does rain during the day I will go out and celebrate. I will even take a few photos and perhaps even a video. I have video the two previous occasions when it rained in South Ockendon.
