Here is is!! Stick it where you like in the most charming sense
I suppose the first thing to say about Of Mice and Men that is interesting, is that it is one of only a limited number of books that really look at the relationship between working class men anywhere. Lenny and George are itinerant workers in the 30s, moving from farm to farm – but unusually rather than the normal American loner figure that is classic, we see two unrelated characters travelling together, investing in a future together, sharing dreams – George taking the responsibility for looking after his big, simple friend.
This is particularly touching when you realise that half the reason they move all the time is because Lenny has “petted” something a bit too hard in several previous places and they’ve had to move on, George has always stuck by him.
It’s a short and sad little book which feels to me like it was always supposed to be seen as a play, but that may be because that is how I first saw it.
