I'm not really here

Lots of places seem to do that, start looking when someone's finally left. It makes the idea of having to give 'notice' a bit pointless.

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

I don' t see anythi9ng particularly unusual in 3 weeks between interviews. For a start the firm have to allow for the possibility that there may be no suitable candidates at all from the first round and have to re-advertise, in which case 3 weeks is the minmum they'd need to still keep the whole process on a reasonable timeline.

As for the (smiley - laugh'training period'smiley - rofl what's that? I've never had the luxury of learning from the last incumbent in any post I've had. It's been 'They've gone, you're it, get on with it'.smiley - shrug

Felonious Monk - h2g2s very own Bogeyman

I've been for numerous job interviews where one has to wait for some time between first and second interviews. As someone who has laso spent a lot of time on the other side of the table, it's worth remembering that there are quite strict rules in place nowadays to ensure that everyone gets a fair chance, and that these inevtiably add a lot of overhead to recruitment. Better that, 'though, than rejecting a good candidate on spurious grounds.

I'm not too bothered abou the three weeks between interviews bit - as BS and FM say, that's quite reasonable. Internal interviews one week, external the next, then arrange second interviews for the shortlisted candidates (hopefully inc. me.).

I am pissed that they had four months to start the recruitment process and only actually got round to doing anything a few weeks ago, mind. Apparently though they've got the person that's leaving to sign an associate contract so they can come back for a few days once the new person's started so they can do a bit of handover stuff.

Well, I haven't got it, or a second interview.

Boss man said I interviewed very well, and he liked the hand-outs I'd done, but that he needed someone ideally with both a broad range of experience or formal qualifications, and that'd he'd compromise on one but not both. Obviously I've got no qualifications, but my experience wasn't broad enough either.

I'm still narked I didn't get a second interview, but I don't know what else I could've done.

He also said that he'd be looking to change my role into something with more to do and a broader remit, but that he wasn't going to decide anything (or tell me anything) until they'd appointed someone to the role.

Hmm, I could murder a beer. What a time to be broke smiley - cross

Demon Drawer

OK so how can you get experience unless you do the job, hang on you have been doing the job.

D'oh. I hate job related politics.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear you didn't get through to the next round of interviews, Kerr.

I've done loads of interviewing and we have to look at ability to do the job, which takes into account potential. I imagine whether you get through to the next round would depend a bit on the other candidates and how you stacked up in relation to them. Have you any idea of the strength of the other candidates? I remember once feeling a bit miffed about not getting a job - then I realised I had lost out to a real star. She stayed a while then moved on and next time I applied for the same job, I really aced it. I'm sure you could do the same, if that's the case.

As far as I can see, none of the internal candidates gota second interview, and I'm pretty sure all the externals they're calling back are better qualified. So, ikt's not like I screwed up or am being passed over unfairly.

Cheers.

Still, hopefully I'll still get something out of it in the end, just not the 'top prize'.

Did you ask for proper feedback - what you could have done better? OK, experience and qualifications you haven't got, but there might be things you could learn from for the future? You might also ask where you came in the internal applicants (they might not tell you, but if you were top, it would make you feel better perhaps.

Sounds as though you might come out of this better than you went in anyway.
