Abu Scruffy
Back in the late 70s, at the age of 14, I was standing at a bus stop near my home in Brighton, UK, when I heard a loud, rattling, spluttering din coming down the road. Around the corner, in a cloud of blue smoke, appeared a battered Citreon 2CV, slowly lurching along in the direction of the beach. Suddenly, the canvas sun-roof flap was thrown back and a bearded, denim-clad figure emerged. As the car chugged past he reached down then produced a fairly tattered blueish-green towel which he then proceeded to wave above his head. "Hey man!" he bellowed over the din of the 2CV's engine, "Do you know where your towel is?"......................................
Amazingly, I knew what he was talking about as my mother's boyfriend at the time had got hold of a scratchy recording, made off the BBC World Service, of the first series of HHGTTG. We had been spending the last few weeks moping around the house saying "Life? Don't talk to me about life!" to each other, which was especially fun as I could try out my newly-broken voice on Marvin's miserable monotone. Happy days!
Last summer, during a visit to my brother-in-law in San Diego, I noticed that my new step-nephew, aged 13, had quite a quirky sense of humour for an American. Before heading home to the deserts of Arabia, I bought him a copy of the HHGTTG. I'm looking forward to seeing him next summer and seeing whether he has bought himself all the books, radio series, video etc. etc. I hope so.
