Sergeant Mushroom Started conversation Dec 27, 2001
Noticed you were new and online, so decided to talk to you, as all the others seem to be working or sleeping or something like that
Are you finding it fun? I found when *I* first joined that it was a little strange and worrying, and I felt a bit intimidated when barging into conversations. But don't worry, it grows on you. And it's very fun
As you can see, you can use s in conversations. A full list of them can be found just by clicking on one, *or* just hover your mouse over one to get its code, then stick it in some <>'s (eg, is written as < blackcat > -just without the gaps).
Sorry if I've frightened you off or something

Hello Sergeant,
I am a little confused about making an entry. I do not see any difference between an entry and an edited entry. Both appear in the guide, or am I missing something?

an Edited entry is just a regular entry that's gone through PR(click the green banner ad thing at the top of the page), been picked by a Scout (that's us http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/scouts ), and gone through the editing system. if your entry gets edited, you don't get to change the edited version, but you still can change the original. am i making sense?

Thanks for that.
Now, if I find a topic is not covered in the guide, do I make an entry or ignore it, if the subject is adequately covered in other areas of the WWW.
If I were to make an entry based on my collated material, edited and paraphrased version of the information available on the WWW where is the boundary between skilled research and plagiarism.

1) if the topic's not already covered in the guide, feel free to make an entry. or even if it *is* covered but you want to add more to the subject, make an entry. but those aren't as likely to get into the Guide.
2) it doesn't matter whether it's covered somewhere else on the Web.
3) i *think* (but i'm *not* sure, you should probably check with one of the Italics or someone) that if you edit and paraphrase, it's not plagerism, that plagarism is only if you copy someone else's words and give them as your own. to be ont he safe side, i would be sure to change all the wording radically, and maybe even cite the sources in footnotes(for how to do footnotes and other stuff, click http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/GuideML-Clinic ). you might try asking about plagarism on 'ask h2g2' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A148907)

I would like to pass comment on Helium 3. I believe it is the energy source of the future. Yet the British Government makes no mention of it in their latest energy plan. Nor is the subject being covered in secondary schools with a view to stimulate pupils to enter this field.
My concern or dilemma is, whether this is the correct forum to air my opinion on this subject, given the international nature of the site and the views I hold from a purely British prospective. I do not wish to offend our friends across the pond, yet it would nice to stimulate change in Government policy supported by public opinion.

Sounds like interesting subject matter. There's lots of interesting, well-informed, articulate people around here from many different countries so you might be able to strike up a debate and gather non-British viewpoints into the bargain. If you want to test out reactions, try posting a question in askH2G2. OK you won't change government policy or wider public opinion from here but an H2G2 article sounds like an excellent idea to me. I'd say try it out and see what happens.
