This could get fun! It's good to be disagreed with from time to time.

You are cordially invited to peruse this: A4497492 and its related forums. I don't advertise it openly because I don't want to encourage 'the wrong sort of people' - either demented bigots or those aiming at easy targets.

I won't be offended if you don't feel like participating - but give it a whirl if you fancy a bit of robust argy-bargy.

Cheers smiley - ok

I'm too preoccupied with the wedding this week (I haven't bought a shirt yet smiley - yikes), so I'll probably leave it till Monday, but yeah, I'll have a go at it then.

You: >I always have an initial surprise when I go to parts of the country where men address male strangers as 'Love' or 'Dear' or 'Duck'.<

Me: >That can happen in any part of the country, if you go to the right sort of pub.<

Honesty, I'm wasted on these people. [lamppost]

Yeah, yeah...I spotted it. And I know those pubs too smiley - winkeye. Not to stereotype anyone...but I'm talking about big, strapping market traders. smiley - ermJust like you'd find in many a gay pub, in fact. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Maybe I'm especially attractive to Yorkshire men and they're coming on to me.

Do they have homosexuals in Yorkshire?

Officially, no fockin way. My best Yorkshire mate can at least cope with the concept though. And gently wind me up about it.

I knew you'd spot it - I wasn't talking about you, dear. smiley - smiley

Ooh!

I've just had a post yikesed for quoting a well-known Scottish football chant regarding Jimmy Hill. I agree that it contain a mildly homophobic epithet...but one which Eddie Mair used on R4 last week. They'd been talking about Elton John winning a libel case. Mair closed the show...
'We've just got time for one more e-mail from a listener. says:
"That Elton John...he's just a big [mildly homophobic epithet]" '

I nearly crashed my car!smiley - laugh

That point on the vehemence of atheists is an excellent one, by the way. Be sure and reaise it on Atheist Fundamentalism.

This Pop forum thingy is partly because I'd like to see forums for all kinds of subject, with Ask h2g2 consequently narrowed in focus, or summat.

I hope my stance is coming across well enough. In summary...I'm not going to defend myself by pretending to be all liberal and tolerant.

I've recently discovered this guy: http://www.samharris.org/ Check out his articles.

And if you want to avoid sliding into a pit of despair, *definitely* steer clear of any thread containing the word 'veil'. smiley - steam

Yeah, I'm aware of your stance. I strongly disagree with lots of what you've written on your blog, but I ain't gonna argue about any of it*. I personally can't see the point about arguing online with anyone who holds a strongly contrary point of view. Talk to them face to face, of course - then you can judge their reactions properly, clear up the inevitable misunderstandings, etc. I used to talk with a fellow sceptic and Born-Again Christian till the wee hours; no matter how vociferous things got, we'd always part as friends. But online, everything conspires against clear communication.

*Oh dammit, just a bit then smiley - biggrin Considering that up until the 1960's, psychologists [who are in no way culturally blinkered] regarded homosexuality as pathological. Surely Thomas Szasz has a weeny point?

Well argued!

Post 16

Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

Yes, I'll concede that psychiatry needed a shake-up...but not Szasz's shake-up. (Did he write on homosexuality? Not sure.)

And I haven't got around to posting Pt III on why my stance in no way justifies cruelty against animals. All I'm doing is questioning the philosophical basis of Animal Rights.

But let's let it lie!

I've dug around a bit on this Szasz (pronounced 'Suss', heh) and he certainly wrote about homosexuality, attacking the 'pathological' bullshit. Presumably you dislike his views on scientism, but I reckon his views on psychiatry deserve examination. He goes too far when he says there is no mental illness, but the current psychiatric view is far too narrow and possibly completely flawed.

Anyway, looks like I'm backtracking again smiley - rolleyes
