Welcome to h2g2 - an article on coin collecting sounds great!! If you want to write an article for the Guide - the best place to start is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A317521 to see how we do it here and what processes you need to follow. But get to know us first - I'm sure that you'll like us
My name is Feisor and I am an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) here at h2g2.
We ACEs are here to assist new researchers so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
You can leave a message on my space just by clicking on my name at the top of this message or by hitting the reply button below - it won't hit back (usually).
The "Italics" (they are the people who run this place - so-called because their names are displayed in bold italics - God Bless 'Em) have left a message for newcomers at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Welcome-Newcomers
it's got a lot of the basic background and how-tos that you will need - a good place to start
Then you can take the H2G2 Tour at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A317459 to see how it all works
If some of the H2G2 terms leave you a little confused, there is a great page about it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A632431 (thanks to Dastardly for this great page)
And finally, the editors of our own newspaper The H2G2 Post have made up a page of links - you can find it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A616718 and then you can read The Post
Well - that should keep you busy for a while I am sure that you will love this community as much as we do There's lots of things to see, clubs to join and people to meet - please don't be shy - just jump right in - this is a friendly place. But be careful - it can become quite addictive - believe me I know
Enjoy!!
Have fun!!!
and above all DON'T PANIC!!!

Hi! Thanks for the welcome. The introductory pages were very helpful, so the only question I have at the moment is:
Where did the "Goo" interface come from?
Can researches submit others?
Ok, that was two questions, and trivial ones but I'm just curious.
Thanks,
Nireena

Good to hear from you
Re Goo skin - you might like to have a look at this page which gives you a history of the evolution of the site http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Versions
The goo skin (or a version of it) was the original - the al*baster was added later - it even has its own fan club at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A362828
Can researches submit others?
No - unfortunately that's all in the hands of the "Italics"
They were nice easy questions let me know if you have any more

Thanks, Feisor! So that one was too easy, eh? Hm.. a harder question perhaps:
Is it possible to use targets in GuideML? For example, (brackets omitted):
A NAME="TOP"
Then, farther down, using a link to jump back up to the top of the entry:
LINK HREF="#TOP"
I tried looking in the GuideML clinic but found no mention of whether or not that feature is recognized.

er ... um ... at this point I should say that if I don't understand the question I don't think I can answer it
Hang about and I'll get some help

MaW Posted Dec 7, 2001
Hello Nireena. The short answer to your question is "yes", using HTML's tag. Thus
something
like so.
The long answer is "yes as above but not for long" because when GuideML 1.0 is introduced these won't work anymore - but happily, there will be new facilities in GuideML itself using the tag to do the same thing. You can keep up to date with all that kind of information and more at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Announcements
HTH, if you have any more queries feel free to ask!

Mina passed it on to the Gurus mailing list, and I had the time so I popped by
It's all part of the service.

Thank you both for the responses!
Feisor- sorry about that, I lapsed into "geek speek" for a moment there. "Targets" are when a link goes to somewhere within the same page, instead of taking you to another page. Useful for long pages since you can make each subheading a link so that people can skip to a section without having to scroll through everything before it.

Can you do that?? I'm impressed!!
Don't worry about geek speak - that's how I learn
Is it all going well???

BTW - you might be interested in Programmers Corner at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A604937
and also this little bit
If you see something you like you can see how it's done by typing http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpageXXXXX where XXX is the user number, for instance to view the code for my page type http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpage38014 - it's probably nice if you ask before "pinching" code but you can have anything off my page without asking
PS That's how I got most of my code
G'day Nireena ...
MaW Posted Dec 8, 2001
There's also
testXXXXXX
for normal articles with "A" codes, thus you can see the code for A123456 by going to Test123456.
Very useful indeed. You can copy code off my pages too if you want - they're all standard GuideML anyway so there's really little to learn from them beside implementation ideas, and since you seem to know HTML pretty well already, GuideML should present you with few problems. Remember, syntax rules are like XHTML 'cos it's all XML...

So *that's* how somebody knew that I was using the "bold" tag instead of the "subheader" one! Neat! I'll have to remember that... I'll also be sure to check out the Programmer's section later.
I'm rather embarassed to admit that my coin collecting entry was temporarily yanked by the mods. I put in a link to the British Royal Mint and instead of "royalmint" I put "theroyalmint" so the link was broken. So I fixed that and re-submitted it. Also got some helpful feedback in the Peer Review forum.
Thanks again for the help!

Hi Nireena,
I see feisor already welcomed you (she welcomed me as well when i first joined *waves at feisor* <bigrin> but it wont do any harm to say hi anyway, so "hi".
*mutters about feisor getting a reply even if feisor had to post to all the mailing lists to find out about the target thing*
I think my replys total 4!

Hi CK! *waves*
Feisor: another question for you... I know they said you can break up long entries into several shorter ones. I'm working on turning a (relatively) short workshop I did on creating a web page into Guide entries. However, to break it into logical chunks it seems like I'm going to end up with 10 entries in the series. Is there really any limit to the amount of entries you can string together like that? (The first installment is A668252.)
Thanks,
Nireena

I submitted your query to the ACEs forum - here's the reply I got from the esteemed vegiman ... it may help
She can open as many pages as she likes and link them but if she wants it to be an official guide entry, she may find that the subs may shorten it to fit on less pages but her original efforts will always be available to be seen at all times - Or she can produce one large page with Target links which she seems to know about already.
That may help
Good luck with your University Project

Good luck, Nireena, and you're very welcome.
There are only 13 University badges onsite, maybe you'll own the 14th?
