The most memorable science lessons from High School are those taught by Mr. Jones, but there are plenty of other pleasant memories as well. For one thing, in science lessons in the first few years I was sat with my friends David Mummery and David Matthews, and the three of us accomplished much that was silly but fun. Including singing the Mahna-mahna song.
Experiments
The Hudsonberg Disaster
As we were approaching the end of high school, we had to do some science experiments that would count as coursework. One of mine went rather badly.
The plan was thus: we would investigate how the heat of chemicals affected their reaction speed. We would use a bunsen burner to heat up sulphuric acid to various temperatures, then put some magnesium into it, and see how long it took to produce enough hydrogen to fill a test tube. Once I had done the experiment a few times, and getting a bit bored, the question occurred to me: 'How do we know it's actually hydrogen we're collecting and not, say, oxygen that's being pushed out of the flask?' So I set about finding out.
Now, as every GCSE science student knows, the way to test if a gas is hydrogen is to put a lit splint into it. If it is hydrogen, it will make a 'pop' sound as it combusts.
In theory.
However, this didn't happen as it should have done. To visualise, there was a flask with the acid and magnesium in, with a bung in and a thin glass tube leading down from the top of it, through some water and into a boiling tube. Becoming a little dismayed that as I tried for the third time with a fresh batch, what was in the boiling tube didn't pop, that we didn't actually seem to be collecting any hydrogen, that my whole coursework experiment seemed to be a sham, I turned my attention to the conical flask. After all, with the tube leading out of it, that was an open container, just like the boiling tube, right? And if the experiment's working, producing loads of hydrogen, that flask and tube should be full of hydrogen, right? So, if I put a lit splint to it, I should hear a little 'pop', right?
Wrong.
Not that there was no difference from before. Whereas before I heard nothing, this time I definitely heard something - and I don't think I was the only one. Likewise, the earlier tests gave no visual result, but this one did - and again, others must have noticed it, because as I began to see clearly again, as the cloud of white smoke around me dissipated, I began to realise that everyone was looking at me. At me, and at the shattered round piece of glass that was lying on my desk where there had been a conical flask mere moments before. Fortunately, I was wearing goggles as we were supposed to, and though my friends weren't, they were turned away at the time. My hands were covered in specks of blood, each speck marking the grave of a tiny shard of glass. I'd like to say I was incredibly brave, but since it didn't actually hurt at all there wasn't really anything to be brave about, and I just kept smiling and laughing at what had happened as the staff came and attended to those of us who were nearby at the time. I was eventually carted off, along with David Mummery, to a recovery room, where, aparently due to being in a state of shock, I varied between being quiet and laughing maniacally. In the end, we got to go home once our parents came to collect us, and we went to see Toy Story 2, which had been released that day. A quick bit of research therefore reveals that the date of the Hudsonberg Disaster was 11th February 2000.
When it came to time to write up the experiment, I put in my 'Safety' part of the write-up (supposedly written before the experiment), "Since hydrogen is flammable, we will ensure that we keep it away from flames." Oh yes.
At least I learned something.
