Kheldar (Don't hate the media, Become the media)

Good to see you finally wrote an introduction to your page. I like it, and will, of course, reply to it later, when I've composed a more proper argumentlist. But then again...you're used to me doing that smiley - winkeye

In the meantime, I would like to officially welcome you to the wonderful world of h2g2. What you probably already knew, I am an ACE, and we are the official welcoming committee of h2g2. Anything you wish to know, places to go, help on GuideML, you name it, and I will see what I can do.
When you're interested in good places to go, visit the links page in the h2g2 post, which can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/thepost
The links page is on the bottom of the page smiley - smiley
Well, hope you'll continue to enjoy yourself in here and feel free to browse around smiley - winkeye

~grin~
Sorry...I'm expected to do those kind of things...I'll explain later. LOL!!

That's ok... I know I'm a slacker - Kasteel is eating up most of my leftover moments and I still gotta get Badschuim out for this week so there you go.
You're dearly missed at Kasteel-forum. Please be informed that my latest 'promotion' was by no means pursued nor initiated by the undersigned. smiley - winkeye

Who do you think gave our webmaster the idea for your promotion smiley - tongueout?

Anyway, it'll have to do for now. I have been told I am missed, but there's no way I can get the forum to run from here. Everything works, every php-site I can find, every Kasteelsite, just not the forum. Webbie and I have spent quite a few days trying to figure out what the problem was, but we couldn't think of anything. I guess I have a vacation from the forum now, except for the occasional visit in the evening.
I'll be back though smiley - winkeye

Well, I'm still sorry about it. :P

Did you know that TM and me are on the move to book Allan Holdsworth? Things look promising, I got the quote from his manager, passed it on and Dick didn't see any problem. So I think we're in business. YAY!!!

I think TM said something about that yes smiley - smiley. Sounds very good! Any ideas as to when he would be able to make it?

Still hoping for Biafra too...smiley - winkeye

He's scheduled for the last week of May 2002.

Why don't you just mail him, or his booking agency?

No worries smiley - smiley!
I've spoken to Dick about it, he had found a dutch booking agency, so I'm still waiting for a result on that.

But something else...that story you wrote on your page, why don't you make an official entry about it? Sounds more like an article than an introduction...smiley - smiley

HELP!

Kheldar (Don't hate the media, Become the media)

Sure I'll help you...that's part of the reason why I'm an Ace as well smiley - smiley. The tricky bit is to learn GuideML, but since it's a lot like HTML and XML, it shouldn't be too big of a problem. Besides, it's a lot easier to learn, because a lot of the coding has been implemented in preformatted tags smiley - smiley

If you want to have examples on how to use GuideML, the easiest thing to do is to take an entry (for instance my Biafra article), and test the code..this is done as followed. Type in the URL for the article (in this case http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A651502 ), and replace the 'A' by 'test'...like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/test651502

If you open the code in a different window than the original article (so both URL's in separate windows), you can compare the code with what you get on screen. You'll find that it's rather easy smiley - smiley

Is that any different then the http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A664670 entry which is already there somehow? Or was that you - coz I didn't do anything. LOL

Kheldar (Don't hate the media, Become the media)

Your introduction page is looked upon as an entry as well. You have created it by editing your user page.
What happens is, you create an account. h2g2 assigns you a number (your Uwhatever). Up til then, your user page is just reserved for you, but until you wrote something on it, it's not really yours yet. When you write something on your userpage, you actually create a guide-entry, and there is some kind of redirection mechanism which makes sure that when you type in your userpage-URL, you are being directed to that entry. In addition, that mechanism makes sure that all the extra's (like most recent conversations etcetera) are added to that page. You have a page, and the entry you wrote is included in it.
Did that make any sense? smiley - smiley

Post 14

Kairo

Got it. But where does this leave your suggestion of submitting it as a guide entry? I mean, it already is one? Or am I having one of those blonde moments again now?

Hey Kairo :-)

Post 15

Kheldar (Don't hate the media, Become the media)

~grin~
Although it is presented as a stand-alone entry in your entries-list, it is linked to the user page. Of course it is possible to do it this way, but what if you want to change your userpage later? Let's say you want to create links to shazz, TM and me, or want to write something completely different on your page...that would mean that the complete entry as it was is gone as well. That wouldn't look to good if it's in the submission procedure, would it smiley - winkeye?

Hey Kairo :-)

Post 16

Kairo

Okay... ~thinking~

Now, what's the bottom line of all this? Did I write a home page, submit a guide entry, or both? LOL

Hey Kairo :-)

Post 17

Kheldar (Don't hate the media, Become the media)

LOL!!
OK, you did not submit anything. You wrote a guide entry. Your homepage (to put it simple) is created by a simple if-statement:

if (entry is written)
homepage = entry + standard settings
else
homepage = default text + standard settings
endif

Standard settings being your journal, your "recent conversations list", guide entries etcetera. All the things you don't see when you just open the URL for the entry (Awhatever).

It's a lot more complicated than that, I don't know how it's all coded, but basically that's what it comes down to smiley - smiley

Hey Kairo :-)

Post 18

Kairo

Blow me... I just wrote/submitted/whatever, pressed a lot of keys constituting a set of sentences, another... erm... article, about guitarists this time. It was added to my guide entries, but not added or inserted to the homepage, despite my feeling that I've been doing the very same thing as the first time, just with a different title and content.
Is that because the homepage content is already 'filled', so it jumps to the second errorlevel? smiley - winkeye

Hey Kairo :-)

Post 19

Kheldar (Don't hate the media, Become the media)

Exactly smiley - smiley. The entry you write and maintain by clicking the "edit page" button on your homepage is automatically linked to your homepage. Any entries you write after that are truly standalone entries. The only reason they appear in your list of entries is because you wrote them.

~grin~
Am I already starting to make sense?

Hey Kairo :-)

Of course, considering the fact that you've been able to shine a light under that thick skull of mine. Quite a feat. smiley - smiley
