Hey young seal pup, on a mission. need to talk. Off to bed now but will try and come back tomorrow. There be a clue, well a bit more than a clue, in 'my conversations'.
We'll get it sorted...that's what friends are for.
night night and take care

Hi boots
Glad, really glad, to hear from you again.
Like you say, a bit more than a clue in your convossmiley - erm
We discussed it somewhat already. I'm a little piqued that she thinks I was being selfish and just playing with her out of boredom. For once, it wasn't self-serving. I thought I was helping.
There are two things that seem like givens to me, but that I now suspect are anything but for Ben.
The first is that, however down you might feel, h2g2 is somewhere outside all that, and provides pure escape.
The second is that you can't analyse someone's writing without analysing the person.
Let's talk. That would be really good.

Atta boy! I think it takes time to reach your 'givens'. The first I understand having fallen into this wonderland at a happy time and allowing it to become my carthartic drug during the depths, I am now content with what it is capable of affording.
The second, I think I still disagree with. If speech can cloak the inner soul, how much more can words when allowed the luxury of time and editing?
'A' soul one can see perhaps, but not methinks 'the' soul. The eyes alone are the window into that.
Good heavens mutt that's far too deep for an unnatural blonde...leave the poor seal alone.
Doing day job at the mo but will be back later, friend.
take care

Sorry I missed you, boots. That was only a brief visit.
This one probably too. We are in the midst of the legendary Weddell-Coffee-Ritual, in its fabulous Saturday variant. It's been known to take hours.
On the other hand, someone has to paint Verminette's bedroom, and fumigate and restore its contents, before school starts.
...Yes, Dear...

Morning! Doing bit of day job and then off to friend's book launch in town. How depressing is that! I now have the dubious honour of having two published authors in my 'almost family' circle.
Don't think this one is going to get a booker prize but it only took a month to write and was accepted by the second publisher he sent it to! Rats!
Title: 'It's all cobblers'. Author: MS Carter.
boots doth feature in it so will be seriously annoyed if she has to pay for her signed copy!
OK back to work. Say hi to the Weddell and I'll have a doughnut with mine, thanks.

Hey friend, sorry not to lurk and see what is there (Ardeche I'm talking about).
RL (and survival) took precedence. NAILED IT! Am now seriously posh totty! Lunch with General Kalashnikof (sp) him of the rifles and now vodka... whatever. 'Sirs' as new boss, Lords as other new boses... Wierd.
The life I left thirty years ago now catches up. Bro in law is most coolest..."You can be proper grown up from monday to friday, sis, then ultimate trogg over the weekends"

Like that philosophy

Gosh and golly gosh...it so is about who you know and not 'what you know'...hey, just have to be me...and true to Ravager. Hope he will approve.
Really cool minds am dealing with. Way over my blonde head (she sort of lies but can play the game smiley - winkeye).

Wierd. But cool. Ben thinks it's cool...and right. Kids think its cool... and right.

Me? Don't know.. it's just another adventure, part of my little arc in the circle of time.

For now I have to listen to Ravager...."Go with the flow"

Wierd...but hey maybe one day I'll sort it.
Take care

Hey, great news.
I'm really pleased for you.
(I don't exactly understand what you're going to be doing, but the enthusiasm shines through)
I think you know that Ravager will approve. I think you know he'll approve of anything that makes you feel like this about yourself.
Pinsmiley - hug
(wondering whether this is thesp reincarnation. Doing for vodka what Joan Collins did for Martini, perhaps?smiley - winkeye)

Hi Pin

Sorry about the red wine ramblings...but I was celebrating. yes really have got a new job and yes think it will be fab. Organising events and editing magazine for rather grand orgnisation. So no, not back into thesp land. I start on the 4th October and the only downside is the fact it's town based so will have to play the commuter game. However hours are very flexible. At least twice a month will be at an event so posh frocks and evening gig and no need to come in tomorrow game.

will tell all offline sometime (it is quite posh)
take care
best get back to current day job speak later

Wotcha Phoc!
Happy New Year and all that Jazz!
Hope the festive season was fun and you managed to get that break.

Meself back in the day job and it's still fun...extraordinary!
Gave up wine in India...now just have the odd beer (really turning into a lad).
My first edition of the magazine out at last. Horrid 'what' where a 'which' should be in the editorial but you just can't make these layout men listen...the proof edits are all but ignored!
If you send address to personal email will send you a copy. Hardly earth shaking but it's a start!
Seem to remember you saying you were going to get published this year...how's that going?
Take care and love to the Weddell

Hey good to hear from you! Tinctured or not.
Day job taking up far too much time leaving barely a jot for social life let alone hootoo.
Have to endure two lunches today, Mother and Angela (her of the weightwatchers cooking friend variety)
Didn't dare say no to either of them, far too scary, so will be back at weight watchers within the month!
Still off the vino. Fell off the wagon with escalator knickers on Friday but hated Saturday so much am actually quite pleased I don't indulge on a regular basis any longer. Beer is cool. Half a pint and I'm full!
Good to see Trout lurking again, we really must have a meet up this year...no excuses boys. Other half's most welcome as long as I can bring my best girlfriends, patrick, Dimitri and co! smiley - winkeye.
Take care and love to all

Well, boots, you've shamed me into a few more lines. Tune that sympathetic ear of yours, OK?

First, a meet up. Yes, we absolutely should. Whether or not we do, I'll leave to the Weddell. She's conspicuously happier now I'm not spending so much time around hootoo, and I owe her the call. We'll see.

As for the tincture, it's a bad habit, and I admire your example. We've just decided on no wine with meals except Sundays. Beer in the house is down to a trickle (getting perilously close to cans going past sell-by, which has never been heard of). The pub more or less looks after itself, because it's such an infrequent resort these days. After that, it's just the whisky. Hmmm. I'll get back to you on that one.

At least the other vice seems to be receding. Over two years now since I last smoked, and I'm finally starting to feel like I'll never need to again.

Trout's (proper) return would make a big difference, to me personally as well as to the site. Part of the reason that I've gone quiet, if I'm honest, is that the sense of critical community waned. That, and the fact that I suddenly realised everyone left's a girl, and I'm frightened of those.

I really wanted to try more co-operative stuff. Individual stuff knocked out gratis is fine as long as you're sure you're getting something out of it, and for a while I was sure, because I was improving so obviously. Then I found myself at a point where breaking new ground was taking a lot of effort - Gunson, Lee, etc. At first I thought I was getting stale, but now I've realised that my personal writing has evolved to the point where I need either to make some money at it or just call it a day.

Collaboration is different. You can always grow through that, or so I thought. None of it has quite worked, though. The N-SS came closest, and that's probably the right formula, playing off each other. That's what I was relying on from Trout when he went AWOL. Why Trout? Well, partly because he's the wittiest of us, but at least as much (if I'm honest about my own hang-ups) because you can push the limits further with another bloke.

The atmosphere of the home is changing; nice, but changing. The Weddell has lost weight, looks great and feels optimistic. Scrofulina is now an out-and-out art student; it suits her and she's winning wide praise for her work too. Verminette is getting feminine (well, slightly) and has a killer haircut, her own iPod and the first hints of male attention.

In other words, I'm surrounded by confident women instead of last year's repressed models. This is great, because it means I can slope off and do my own thing. It also means that I never get consulted, but that's better than always getting consulted and then blamed for the outcome.

Here she comes back in, bless her. Yes dear, I am talking to hot totty and yes, I'll come off immediately and clean out the budgie-cage like I said I would. No dear, I'm not laughing at you. It's just that I had an amusing thought about typing at 60 hen-pecks a minute.

Pick up later then, boots. Take care now!

Pinsmiley - winkeye

Aah Pin you are deliciously irrepressible!
I am so pleased that the important ladies in your life have the upper hand again. In their lives as well.
We really aren't so scary when you get to know us- just like blokes but far cleverer. Historically some of he greatest manipulators have been girlies, Lucrezia, Cleo, Boodica, Marie Antoinette, Josephine, to name but a sprinkling of perfume. What hope did you poor boys ever have? smiley - laugh.

Re: Hootoo. I do agree about the lack of male influence (and not jut because boots happens to have more sympathy with the weaker sex).
Generally blokes write better than girls are less wallowing and more incisive. I think when Funderlick retired we lost a great mentor and with Trout now merely an occasional observer it is more like a girlie's night in than a writing forum.
Selfishly I have a modicum of creative satisfaction in my new role, albeit formulaic and extremely safe. It does afford the opportunity of honing the craft and, more importantly, it also has a readership interested in the subject. This results in relevant, if generally flattering, feedback… on stage known as applause, the drug that keeps you going.
Just write and be damned young man; articles, letters, anything. Get it into print!

Re vices. The alcohol still goes well. I wish I had the strength to kick the nicotine. The fear of recurring fatness precludes psychologically unfortunately.

It will be two years in May since Ravager buggered off. It still hurts but I am slowly coming out of the darkness. It really has been the oddest experience. One day I may write about it… in a boots -esque style of course. Getting to know oneself is not always pleasant, accepting that person is the beginning of the treatment. India was good for that. Dirty, smelly, poverty stricken, smog ridden and the noisiest place on earth but gorgeous and incredibly humbling.

Time for a bath and then the round robin family phone calls…bloody expensive now Ravager pup is a temporary Antipodean. Baby boots is still playing Scott of the Antarctic and is involved in local radio and the nightmares that claim to be grandchildren have threatened a visit. Apparently they are both still beautiful…I did tell the vile princess that I don't do ugly grandchildren and that the moment she gets spots she is no longer related. Her brother has hit the smelly lump, one syllable stage…shame men never grow out of that one smiley - winkeye. Lunch with mother and dinner with friends.
Makes a pleasant change from a week of posh frocks and coronets! Life is not all bad.
Take care tap soon and let's work on the meet.
Boots
