Oh, you genius...
(smiley - somersault - that's a first time for that particular Smiley!)
Hang on a minute...just adjusting my rapture...ahhh...that's better.

Trout, you are more than welcome in any miserable thread of mine/hers/theirs. Your invitation would have been direct and personal, were it not for the fact that you appeared to have chosen the list of those who have inexplicably Funderliked off.

And your latest Entry is exquisite, even allowing for the fact that it's got me in it. It should be Polished and/or Posted immediately, but modesty forbids. Well, slightly discourages, anyhow.

Pinsmiley - cheers

On top of which, if you forget to subscribe to your own UG-pieces, then you can expect to feel unappreciated.

I worked hard on that title, y'know (not that you'd notice)

Huh! Thickfish...

(off to read the frying-pan-thing again. Oh wow, it's even got a recipe in it. Now that's what I call satire!)

1. Yeah, I enjoyed doing it ... it's a sort of a homage-piece doncha think?

2. Unappreciated. I did indeed feel that I was putting in more than I was getting out. Is that normal? Moreover the ever-escalating phone bill was a serious fiscal consideration ... by not posting to h2g2 much, I'm saving around 80 quid a month.

1. Homage is smiley - cool. Mutual grooming. It's a mammal thing, yeah? So preen, why doncha?
*wonders if fish do it, but if they can drive through Wales, presumably they must*

2. 80 quid a month does sound quite expensive for being ignored. If you like, I could suggest a few places where they'll dress you up, strap you down up and then ignore you for not a lot more than that.

And it sounds like you can actually measure the difference between what you put in and what you take out. Sort them in to neat piles, kind of thing. That's a highly-valued ability. You could go into accountancy, if you put your mind to it. It'd help stop you putting your mind to all those other strange and unrewarding things, too.

As for the question "is that normal?" - can't help you there, sorry. Never met the guy.

...Hey, you coming over to preen Ben then?

Getting Out v Putting In.

It's gut feeling. That's a very subtle Swansea ain't it. I'd have put "Look. There's a swan. See?"

In truth, I posted this in a moment of weakness, after convincing myself that it was never going to come right, and also a bit fearful of a perfection-rut.
It's been picked up and reshaped a few times. The original version predates other stuff in related vein (eg Crackle, Atropos).
Imperfect and overworked ground, I reckon.

Yeah, maybe you could stop the motivational stuff and do something else for a bit. You cover it very well though.

How about answering this question instead.

Is the Japanese standard for the chemical composition of steel (JIS G3101?) more or less arduous than its British equivalent (BS 7668?)

Sorry.

Serious Q?
Hmmm...well, I should know better but...

You're going to have to tell me why you're asking before there's any likelihood of a useful answer. For now :

These two standards aren't really comparable.

JIS G3101 is a general standard for hot rolled structural steels. Some of the material it covers has fairly loose specs for general application, while some of it has special properties and accordingly exacting tolerances.

A European equivalent to G3101 is BS EN 10025 (90/93). Here's a link, courtesy of Corus C+I :
http://www.corusconstructionandindustrial.com/ccilibrary/EN%2010025.pdf

If you read through this, you'll find reference to BS 7668, which is not an equivalent to G3101 at all, but a highly application-specific standard for weldable hollow sections for weathering duty (ie with special atmospheric corrosion resistance).

BS 7668 is a throwback. They haven't got round to reconciling a Euronorm for this application yet, but fairly soon it'll probably get superseded.

Few steels are primarily specified by composition. Compositions are stated in most standards, but they're fairly wide and in any case are often excepted by arrangement. Designers normally spec steels by properties. Structural steels (whether its C-Mn solid solution-strengthened regular stuff or it's microalloyed precipitation-strengthened and grain-refined ritzy stuff) are usually specified in terms of properties, most often tensiles and impact properties, also weldability, sometimes corrosion resistance, RoA etc.

FWIW, you're asking the wrong son-of-AB. This is kid brother's field, construction grades and applications. Unfortunately he doesn't do hootoo, as far as I know.

Go on then - why are you interested?

A combination of whimsy and shortcuttery I suppose ... Korean Universal Beams are available locally to JIS; just need to be sure the product isn't inferior to BS-compliant.

Monopolisation, yeah. It's tough being omnipresent sometimes.
And thanks for reminding me to thunderbolt the Sagan fellah. Cosmological pretension really should be the domain of a single Supreme Being, which is me, of course.

Incidentally, I'm not completely stupid, you know. I know that when that little box says there's 135 other Researchers logged on, in reality there's only me. Plus you, the sole survivor of the BBC. A warped genius, with an intellect scarcely hugely inferior to my own.

I know who you are. I know it's you, Paxman. I know what you did with all the others...
