Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Thank you, Ashley! I thought quite carefully about the title before submitting the entry.

I don't think there is anything else. I believe I answered all the points in the thread, including the one about there being different methods of achieving fire. There's lots of extra information in the links, so hopefully if anyone wants to go into greater detail, eg about selection of wood, they can find it in the links.

When I saw a bow drill first produce fire, I was really excited, almost like developing my first black and white film (where I took the paper out of its bath and watched it produce the picture in my hand!).

As I said to the scout who picked it, I've always wanted to see an entry on this topic in the Guide - and now it will soon be there! <ok?

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Thanks, Ashley1smiley - biggrin

Isn't h2g2 just great! I hoped this would be an interesting subject and I found that xyroth also has detailed knowledge. How did you come to be interested in this (I'm guessing Ray Mears, who I think is wonderful, with his breadth of knowledge)?

I only have one problem with Ray Mears- his knowledge is great yes, but he never seems to *really* put the stud in to practice. Sure, he's showing ypu how to survive, but he only really demos it- there's no sense that he's actually surviving on it....

I can see what you mean about Ray Mears, however, in some of the programmes I have seen him in, he goes into the woods, chops down saplings to build a shelter, gathers roots to tie it all together, gathers wood to make the fire. That is believable. There have beens ome bits where the lore is demonstrated, however I have felt that there is a core of competence there, that is impressive.
