I read something recently which very much reminded me of Eustace; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, by Mark Haddon. Not because of the illustrations (there are very few) but because of the voice of the narrator.
Maybe you have read it already.

Hullo Milla,
Oops, I've been very slack in my h2usage of late. Tut. I do apologise. No, I haven't read that - I'm as slack on reading modern novels as I am at posting on here ... unless they're graphic novels; I've done a few of those lately. Perhaps I should investigate that dog.
