Hi, I thought I'd better come and talk to you here, since we bump into each other in 2 threads... and probably more.
Your studies sound fascinating. I learned Russian for 7 years in school (forgotten it all now of course) and wondered how you're getting on with it? I loved it.

Such a great idea! You know, I actually thought of dropping by myself.
And you can never appreciate boy too much. He's not an actor like Ian McKellen - yet, but so what?
And my studies are pretty interesting. Well, mostly. Right now I'm searching for topics for my final exams in German Literature...
I like Russian. Having learned quite a few languages now - or started to learn them to be more precise - there isn't much a new language can throw at me grammarwise which can shock me. And Russian works like German in great parts. I liked it.
I did stop learning it for now, though, because I was told that I had to make a test at the level of somebody having Russian for six years. Talking about shopping isn't helping me much for that since it will be a written translation from Russian to German.
And I'm really confused now, so if you haven't answered that question on another thread yet - where do you live?

I did answer, but here it is again: I live in Erkelenz, which is close to the Dutch border, near enough to Düsseldorf/Krefeld/ Mönchengladbach.
I loved Russian, but never did enough work, which I regret now. I studied it to A-level (like Abitur) if you're familiar with the old English school system (my father was in the army, based in Germany, I went to boarding school). One of the highlights of our course (we did language & literature) was being in Leningrad - as it was then - in 1982 and the guide, having heard that we were studying The Bronze Horseman took us on the tour of the city covered by the poem. It really helped me visualise that one. The other works we studied were The Cherry Orchard (I love that), some incredibly short stories by Chekhov and Zima Junction by Yevtushenko.
I always get really excited to meet real Germans on h2g2, because so many of the ones I've met that live here turn out to be Brits like me!

Oh no, I'm a real German. Born, raised and still living in Berlin.
And you've been to Leningrad? Cool. I think, being in the country itself is the real test when learning a language. If you can understand and talk to the locals, then you really got it.

I know the feeling.
When I was in England as a teenager, I not only had problem understanding people but I had to realize that I had the vocabulary to talk about Shakespeare but couldn't order a drink somewhere or things like that.

That's where I'm lucky with German. I can understand how the Grammar works, due to having studied Latin French & Russian at school. Plus I've always been interested in English grammar (I'm old enough that we were taught English gramar at school)
ah, probably I should mention that I learned German from living here, by osmosis probably. I did a German course in the Army which taught me how to swear and say to farmers "sorry, we just drove a tank over your cabbage field" but apart from that it was useless.
Since 1990 I have worked in a series of "German"companies (foreign ones, based here) and that has helped no end.
I have to say though, that with the exception of films like Schtonk!, Der Bewegte Mann, Die Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo and Goodbye Lenin - I never watch films in German. That is to say, I never watch films that have been dubbed. It's difficult for me to get to the cinema though, since I live in a small town, and my husband works evenings. Getting a trip to Krefeld to see films in the OV is a massive production, and to see ROTK I had to persuade him that I positively had to go, and in the end I went alone (funnily enough, last year I had to go to Köln alone to see otC)
I'm waffling. I have to go and write
catch you later

You were taught how to say "Sorry, we drove a tank across your property?" - That gives the movie "Buffalo Soldiers" a whole new look... I love that movie, btw, have you seen in maybe? I would be interested what someone who was in the army said to it.
Dubbing should be illegal. I mean, okay, it is more relaxed to watch a foreign movie without having to read subtitles, but if all foreign movies were subtitled - man, we would learn languages so fast.
In Berlin there is a big cinema only showing ov. I love it!
How did the writing go? And what exactly do you write or is it still a secret?

You're so lucky in Berlin! I haven't seen Buffalo Soldiers, but if I ever get around to renting the DVD I'll let you know what I think. Maybe it hasn't been on tv yet and I'll get lucky.
I love watching subtitled films. When I lived nearer the border we used to watch a lot of Dutch TV, which was great for me, all in original with subtitling. I learned a lot of Dutch - reading and understanding but not speaking (there's one difficult language to pronounce)
As for the writing - well I write fic, as you probably know, and i've just finished my first novel which is poo, but i'm going to edit it and see if I can make anything out of it.
Last night I didn't get any writing done as i let the gruesomes stay up late (no school/kindergarten today because of Rosenmontag) and then I watched Men in Black II.
About which I'll post in the thread.

It is a great movie. Buffalo Soldier, I mean. Unfortunately some idiots decided to put only the German version on the dvd. I mean, what's the point of a dvd if there's not even the ov on it? And since I saw the ov in the theatre; I'm not going to spoil the movie by now watching the dubbed version.
I plan to import it from the UK or somewhere when it's out there and not that expensive anymore.
I love Berlin, but one advantage of living in the southern parts of Germany - more free days. Rosenmontag isn't a day off here.

Rosenmontag isn't a holiday where I work either, I had to take a day holiday so I can look after my kids. My childminder's husband is involved in the Karneval because he's in the Freiwilligefeuerwehr, she didn't want to have to take 5 kids under 8 to the parade, and it seems mean that her kids have to miss out. So I took the day off.
We all went, and my hubs turned up too (doing one of those talking on the mobile phone things when he was 2 people behind me) so we had a lot of fun.
Until it started to snow in bucketloads!

Oh, I thought it was a holiday.
Well, I don't have to go to university anyway, since today is the first day of vacation.
I do envy you for the snow, though. In Berlin it's just grey and cold, without snow. At least, it's not raining...

Sho - employed again! Posted Feb 23, 2004
the snow isn't settling though, which is good. NRW grinds to a halt at the sign of one cm of snow
and I have to go to work tomorrow.

Methos (one half of the HHH Management) Posted Feb 23, 2004
Yes, I can imagine. But snow is so beautiful. The way it makes everythng look so pure and if the cover is really thick, it softens all the angles in the city.
Methos
P.S.: Something totally different - have you considered writing something in the PotC fandom? Yes, this is a hint.
Elf-boy appreciation society ;-)
Sho - employed again! Posted Feb 23, 2004
I'd most likely spontaneously combust writing in the otC fandom.
Have you read any?
In fact, do you read fic? If so, which genre, and what do you like?
(ever researching, sorry)
I really like the idea of a Jack Sparrow/Will Turner thing, but it would have to be gratuitous sex only, since Will at least clearly is 100% heterosexual. Mind you, that's never stopped me in the past.
Our snow has all gone, it's now too cold for more, which means i have to get up early to scrape my car. Still, at least there probably won't be much traffic around.

Methos (one half of the HHH Management) Posted Feb 23, 2004
Have I read any? I read a lot. Will Turner and Jack Sparrow - Oh , CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow, who could resist?
That thing called heterosexuality - I don't think Captain Jack Sparrow would narrow himself down to anything - not even one sex. And Will - I so wanted him to sail into the setting sun with Jack. Damn the writers! I mean, Elizabeth is just puppy love and I'm sure Jack could teach him a thing or two...
Maybe in the sequel?
I read a lot of fan fiction, almost exclusively slash. Fandoms? Harry Potter, LotR, PotC, X-Men, Highlander..... Oh, and Stargate of course. I tend to have certain phases in which I read a certain fandom, then I read another and so on.
And what about you?

I planned to check iz just now hoping to find exactly that message.
You know, I was at a friend's yesterday and she gave me a picture of boy at some sport event or other. He lifts his shirt so that you can see his bare chest and stomach.
But a fan, a very rude one, used the oppurtunity and poked her/his finger right into boy's belly button!
