At some point one of us will write an article about us, but in the short term....

Harlequin/Arlecchino are 'zanni' supporting (yeah right !) characters within the framework of the 'commedia del'arte' (Comedy of the artists) basicly strolling players who perform using a set of stock characters, only the stories change.

Other characters and derivations are: Pierrot (Harlequin's partner/friend) Columbine (A lady's maid and Harlequin's one true love) Scaramouche (A soldier/come braggart - think 'Falstaff' from Shakespeare), Punchinello (as in Punch and Judy) and many more.

so basicly what I said was 'say Hi to the wife and kids' smiley - smiley

Harlequin, there is an existant article on Commedia dell' Arte. It's brief but it does get all the main points. I was going to write one, but then I found the existing one. Oh well.

Yes, Shakespear took a good deal from Commedia, just as he took a good deal from the Romans and Greeks.

More recently, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is a musical based on early Roman Comedy (Plautus), but which comes off as basically a Commedia setup. Pseudolus=Arlecchino, Hysterium=othe Zanni, Hero and Philia=Octavius and Angelica (or other lovers), etc.

It would appear that the basic panorama of commedia has proved a lasting framework.... Romeo and Juliet being the prime example.

The basic scenario of two opposed or socially different families, their friends etc, etc, star-crossed lovers, convoluted and circular plots, and all the other trimmings, could be applied to a vast array of modern theatre, film and literature.

I must admit to have only scratched the surface, but a friend once described me as 'Harlequin' and it sort of stuck. Still wonder if it was a compliment or not. smiley - smiley

I'm not sure whether it was a compliment or not. The character has many qualities, attractive and otherwise.

That's the ticket. Keep the jury out, and don't feed 'em 'til they return a verdict you like!
