The first person who made an impression on me was my grandmother. I remember how her smile was like the sun bursting forth from behind a cloud. I wished she could live forever, and she came closer than most. She survived a fall down a flight of stairs, a nervous breakdown, the depression, having her sons away at war in the 1940s, serious circulation problems in her mid-seventies. And she still made it to 93.
