h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

One summer we used crayons to write messages on rhubarb leaves. We fold the leaves, stuff them in bottles, then throw the bottles into the ocean to see if anyone would write back.

We had them, but they didn't belong to us. We borrowed them from the rich folks who lived in the next alley.

Re, the message in bottles,
I would have expected a reply from the Goons at least.
(Spike Milligan etc.)
although it would probably have just been rhubarb-rhubarb-rhubarb.

It may not have been a real ocean, though maybe the Goons didn't use a real ocean either.

I would love to belong to a goon show fan Club. !!. I used to listen to them relgiousoy every single week. I see that they started in 1951 abd ended ub 1960

Paul was the show popular in the states as well? I see that there are some collections of their works. I think I must try and get them. What a laughter a minute show. all clean and intensely clever and amusing.

I really do not know whom I liked the best. Probably Spike Milligan as he was the most zany.

I was a little tyke in the 50s, so I don't know if it was available in the U.S. It became a cult item on our local classical radio station in the 70s and 80s, but they no longer offer the Saturday-evening humor show that they had then.

I loved the Goon shows although I was a bit too young to appreciate them
as a child.
Luckily they were broadcasted again so I was able to appreciate the humour.
Tapes of the shows are available in my local bookstore, and probably from
the BBC or Amazon.

I was devastated when the Marx Brothers and Three Stooges broke up. Death is a poor excuse!

I always envied Harpo because he got to do all the things I wish I could have done. He walks past a lemonade stand, and climbs into the lemonade bowl . When he goes golfing, every time he sinks the ball in a hole, he goes for a dip in the nearest pool (there were posh houses next to the golf course. All had pools). He runs around chasing pretty girls, and gets to honk that silly horn. He plays the harp with no professional instruction, and becomes very proficient. Lucky, lucky Harpo.
