Welcome Duncan!
Amy: ear-deep in novels, poetics, and historical documents. Started conversation May 15, 2001
G'day and welcome to h2g2! My name is Amy, and I'm an ACE, Assistant Community Editor, here at the Guide. I'm one of a number of official meeters and greeters whose purpose is to help people feel at home. Here are a few helpful pages:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Aces --learn more about what the ACEs do and who they are.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Gurus --these people know just about everything there is to know about this site-- report all bugs to them.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/GuideML-Clinic -- the GuideML Clinic, made by our beloved Bruce, where you can learn all about GuideML (naturally!). It's similar to HTML, but easier.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Smiley --learn to emote with the best of them!
If you need anything, just let me know by either responding to this message or by leaving me a note on my user space, U50994. See you around... enjoy!

Absolutely! I adore Anne McCaffrey's writing-- own every Pern book she wrote and have read them all several times. Even tried to restrain myself from buying the new one-- Skies of Pern-- before it came out in paperback (ie, waiting a year). I couldn't. It's quite good.
As far as ACEing goes, there's not much to getting picked that I'm aware of. The best advice I've got is stay out of trouble and learn your way around some of the technical issues and how certain processes work (Peer Review, which I'm not so hot on myself, and Moderation for starters). I really do love ACEing... especially when the person I've greeted ends up being a friend. I'm actually a very shy person in real life, and (oh, I hate to admit it) this whole system of welcoming new-comers has really upped my confidence, at least with people I don't know very well. You never know what you'll get out of it.

hehehe....I ordered The Skies of Pern even before it came out I couldn't wait to return to my favorite planet. Have you read The Crystal Singer series?....or the Freedom books?
Welcome Duncan!

Both, actually, except for the second book in the Crystal Singer Series. I don't know why, I just never read that one. *shrug*
Pern is probably my second home (other than here, but that's another conversation...)... I reread most of the books this year when I was really frustrated with *fill in blank here* and it really helped me to relax. I really do seem to spend an awful lot of time there... it's amazing to me I never had dreams about dragons.

I've only one... just a lovely wax sculpture of a little red dragon with the most adorable expression on her face, holding some flowers and a heart. Kinda corny, but so far it's the only "friendly" dragon I've been able to findl. Not that I've looked all that much... I want to get a bunch for my college dorm room next year.

I also have a bunch of them on my machine at work that I cycle through as backgrounds. I'd be happy to send them your way if you like.

YAY!!! (that's actually Dragonfly's "special" yay, but I can't remember how to do the little TM thing...)
It's quite fun, ACEing. Neatest way to meet people here.
Welcome Duncan!
Duncan Posted Jun 5, 2001
I'm looking forward to getting into it. Meeting people is one of the main reasons I wanted to be an ACE.

So, Amy....will you help guide me thru learning all the ways of ACEhood? I'd hate to make a dope outta myself in the ACE forum. LOL
Welcome Duncan!

I can certainly try. Though I'm not the *best* person to talk to, I'm a pretty new ACE myself (just never bothered signing up until a few months ago), I'll try my hardest.
And we *all* make dopes out of ourself. It's the ACE way.

Let me ask this.....when it comes to greeting new foks, do you just take a peek at their page and see if anyone has said hello yet, or is there some system you guys follow?
