Archery

This is the web site of Glasgow Archers. Archery is a subject that, for me, is starting to verge on the obsession! If you have any suggestions or comments, please contact me through the web site...

I've just watched a small spider scurry across the top of my computer monitor, what does this signify?

It is Easter Sunday, Happy Easter to you whoever or wherever you are.
Springtime, the outdoor season for archery is just beginning, I've been looking forward to this for a long time. Outdoor archery is a challenge, this year perhaps more so, with the foot and mouth crisis, venues for shoots are experiencing problems with access and availability. I hope that this situation is cleared in the not too distant future.

Recently a number of member of my club made a day trip to Cluny Clays outdoor centre (near Kinross) to try our hands at field archery. It was an excellent day out. This was my first experience of this version of the sport and I enjoyed myself greatly, perhaps this was because I won the competition we arranged, and was one of the few not to lose any arrows!

It is now the middle of July, the rain seems to be constant, where can I get enough Gopher wood? My season so far has been poor, way below what I should be shooting, still not to worry, it's only a game...

I've completely changed my style of shooting perhaps a change is as good as a rest.

I've decided to train as a coach, and hopefully help others to be better archers.

Its been a busy time recently, Scottish Championship, Papingo at Kilwinning and our own club shoot in Glasgow. I've not really been fit enough for a major competition, so I opted to try a Papingo for the first time. A Papingo is to shoot a bird (wooden) on a pole, on top of a tower this means to shoot straight up in the air, this is not a problem, the problem arises when the arrow come back down. (As an aside, we've all seen on the news, various groups discharging firearms into the air, I wonder how many injurys are caused by this action?). Its easier to follow the flight of the arrows as we were using longbows and blunt arrows. I enjoyed this shoot and will try again next year.

The outdoor season is now basiacally over! Am I despondent over the past seasons results? You bet I am! But never mind there is always net year.

I received an e-mail (from a reputable childrens TV programme) recently enquiring if I knew anything about the Mongol warriors of old wearing silk shirts in battle.

When a warrior was hit by an arrow, the arrow would not pierce the silk but drag it into the wound with the arrow head. The Mongol surgeon would the twist the silk round the arrow so that the silk would cover the barbs on the arrow head enabling the arrow to be removed without causing any more damage.

I had heard of this theory, I was then asked if I would like to take part in a demonstration to prove it. As an archer I am intrigued and am hoping that I will be soon in a position to complete the demonstration.

As I mentioned earlier, I would like to become an archery coach, well I have successfuly completed the first stage of my goal! I am now an (official) GNAS Assistant Coach! It was a lot of hard graft, but now I am looking forward to completing the course to become a fully qualified Coach.

The silk shirt theory has been tested and works! Filming took place recently in TV studio and was quite successful. I believe it is due to be broadcast in Spring 2002.

...more to follow.
