Hello me[Andy]g. smiley - smiley

I was just pestering Joe at his space, but then I clicked some links and realized that you're the current MathEd. I've just started an askh2g2 thread (F19585?thread=228908) about whether people would be interested in having a Maths Group around here. I was thinking of a page where Math people could hang out and talk about stuff, and where anyone could drop by to ask math questions, and there would be resident smiley - geeks available to answer them.

I just thought I'd drop by and ask you what you think of this idea. It doesn't seem to be quite the same project that you're up to with the Maths Institute. Has anyone set up a page like this before, that you know of?

Also, the subject of notation came up. Has there been any progress on getting a way to post mathematical notation here?

PS - *shameless plug* - I've just submitted A893900 - Linear Algebra - to Writing Workshop! I'd be honoured if you'd drop by and tell me what you think.

Hi GTB! smiley - smiley

I don't mind people using the Institute page to do everything you've suggested there. It would certainly get more people involved, and then the people who know stuff would be able to write entries on it too. There are lots of maths entries not linked from the institute right at the moment... at some point soon (once I've settled into my PhD) I'll get round to sorting the pages out.

Notation... well, in my opinion, textohtml is the best thing to use (a download site is linked from the institute at U162115).

If people want to use the institute as a place to ask questions etc. then I'd be happy for them to do so. smiley - smiley But it looks like you've set the lab up, so I guess that'll be the place. If people want to write maths entries then they can still channel them through the institute if they want to. smiley - coolsmiley - smiley

Hello! I guess I got a bit excited there, and started up the Maths Lab before you had a chance to respond here. I hope that wasn't presumptuous of me. I see you dropped by and signed up. smiley - ok

I hope people use the Lab, and for entry-writing, I can definitely direct people to the Institute. My Linear Algebra entry is actually turning into a project of about half a dozen entries; how can I go about putting them through the institute, once they're all written?

Well, er... I think you'd pass them on to the institute, and then someone (probably me) would head over there and edit them? We'd probably then need to get it into PR as a project... I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. I haven't done too much with the institute so far (as you can probably tell). I'll have a look at one of the other projects and let you know. I'll add your name to the researcher list on the page too. smiley - smiley
