I hate to get serious... I'm not the serious type, especially around here. But something has really been bothering me for the last couple of weeks.
When I'm posting on H2G2, I'm doing it for fun... I really enjoy interacting with the people here and doing it lightheartedly. Sure, I occasionally get into a theological or political discussion, but that is not my real purpose here. But I've noticed that there are many researchers who take a totally different approach to H2G2... some use it as a means to vent their political views on different people, and some as a way to simply pick a fight. Some use it solely to do research and submit to the guide ...
Most researchers engage in a variety of these things, and enjoy most of them. But, what has been bothering me, is the researchers that don't seem to enjoy any of it! Bickering, moderating, taking some issues entirely too seriously, offending other researchers... you all know the kind of researcher I'm referring to.
Yes yes.. I'm being hypocritical... I realize this. But I genuinely want to know why these people are here! I love H2G2, and if someone else doesn't that is alright by me.. but there is no reason to hang around and try to ruin it for the rest of us!
This isn't a pro-moderation rally--I know we'd be better off without it--but is it truly neccessary to say things that can ruin someone's day? We don't have that many days here the way it is. Anyone... a little input?

I don't think you're being hypocritical, and I do know the kind of researchers you're referring to - unfortunately...
...but I think that those researchers are taking life in general and h2g2 specifically way too seriously - expecting h2g2 to work like RL - but my opinion is that what amuses me so much here at h2g2 is that *anything* can happen here, way beyond RL, and way beyond imagination, even (well, sometimes I stumble over things that really make my mind boggle!) way beyond *my* imagination!
I'm not here to imitate RL - I'm here to have a wild and crazy VL (Virtual Life) and I'm 100 per cent set on enjoying it as much as I can - and it keeps me terribly busy, being addicted!

Apollo, some people just come online to stir things up. They get to say and do things they'd never dream of doing in RL because they have an anonymous shield to hide behind. I find it best to just ignore them. They're greatly outnumbered by the "normal" researchers.

...this reminds me of the U.S. citizens who are upset with how things are.... they complain and they want what they want... ::sigh::
*IF* these researchers are bickering because they want change, they need to form coalitions, which h2g2 is a great tool for doing.
But I tend to have the opinion that there are some cranky people out there who unfortunately can not let go. Maybe they are venting!??? Nothing wrong with that!!! But constant negativity's unhealthy.
I tore into my older brother yesterday because I'm tired of his complaining, negative attitude. Bleh. That's not very healthy, either!!!!

I for one think H2G2's just a place to have a laugh and wind down after a boring or bad *or* good day. It's nice just to chat and be silly for a while

You see, there's far more nicer people on h2g2 here to have fun and/or contribute to the Guide.
You won't catch me fighting or arguing, unless it's afight

Oh I will be found in a fight or argument here, but for me it really comes down to what I beleive in. I don't pick fights is what I mean. It's six am, what am I doing out of bed!??
Oh. Work. Right.

Apollo,
having fun is a serious business. There are in this RL world alas a number of people who think it is fun to hurt someone else, and to gain status with their peers from it.
We cannot stop them from coming into our world, unless they seriously violate the rules.
I definitly don't have problems with people who only see the serious part of h2g2, like the edited entries and peer review, I like discussing there with all my RL knowledge and ignorances.
Other times I move over to the VL part just to have fun, often with the same people as in peer review.
If there are discussions of people who are blinded by their limited views I am tempted to answer, but I refrain, and just go away. Let them, if they like it. If they go too far, somebody will yike them. The only way to realy frustrate them is to completely ignore them, make them invisible.
It gives me a thought for my list of things to procrastinate:
a hate-corner, where people can rave and spit in private about all their frustrations without bothering our kind of abnormal people.

Uncle, there is already a mechanism for unseriousness.
If the system discovers a post that may somehow be interpreted as not completely and unambiguisly(?) serious, the blue face in the right corner will turn red in shame.
