The Gondwanatheres were an interesting bunch. The name means 'beast from Gondwana' the great Southern continent. They were not any kind of presently-existing mammals … they were either not quite true mammals, but belonging to the very nearly mammalian cynodonts of which I've written in my articles, OR they are true mammals, more closely related to the marsupials and placentals than to the monotremes, but outside of all three of those groups proper. Like the article said, this one was unusually large for a mammal still living in the time of the dinosaurs.
